Bachelor of Visual Arts

Passionate about art? Our visual arts degree prepares you for the demands of a career in contemporary art, whether as an artist or in the many other roles within the art sector.

Study visual arts and enjoy a student-centred and studio-based programme where you can follow your interests in art – including painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, sculpture or moving-image.

As a graduate of our visual arts programme, you’ll have a sound understanding of the trends and concepts driving contemporary art, the importance of m?tauranga M?ori, and how to work collaboratively to produce objects, craft, images, taonga and artefacts.

AUT Internz partners with employers overseas, as well as locally, to offer new AUT graduates opportunities to put their learning into action. Westpac, Lululemon and Allbirds are among the employers welcoming AUT interns and full time graduate employees.

The Employability Lab hosts a number of events like career fairs, expos and presentations where – as potential employees - students and graduates can meet employers. We also run regular career development workshops and recruitment events.

Workshops and employer presentations

We are connected with many employers who provide the leadership speaker series, industry panels and talks about potential employment with their organisation, including internship and graduate opportunities.

Past presenters include Samsung Electronics NZ, MYOB, Deloitte, BNZ, NZME, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Counties Manukau DHB and AR/VR Garage.

PSW Opportunity

  • During study, all students on a student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during semester and full time during vacations.
  • After completing Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree or Higher Qualification, a student will get a three years open post-study work visa.
  • After completing Level 8 Post Graduate courses of 1 year, students get 1 year PSW.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

For India

12 years of schooling with an overall average of 75% in four academic subjects, including a minimum 60% in English from All-India Senior Certificate (AISSC) - Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), or Indian School Certificate (ISC) - Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), or Indian State Boards - Karnataka, Maharashtra or West Bengal State Board Examinations.  

All other Higher Secondary State Board Examinations require an overall average of 80% in four academic subjects with a minimum 65% in English. 

Tertiary requirements

One year of successful study at bachelor level at a recognised institute, or equivalent, OR

Completion of 12yrs schooling plus 1yr of a Diploma with passes in all papers at a recognised institute, OR

Completion of 10yrs schooling and completion of a 2-3yr Diploma with passes in all papers at a recognised institute

60% in Y12 English from CBSE, CISCE, Karnataka, Maharashtra or West Bengal State Board Examinations.

65% from all other State Boards.

For Worldwide

  • Cambridge International Examinations (CIE); or
  • General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Levels; or  
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB); or
  • Other secondary qualifications assessed on a case-by-case basis

Tertiary requirements

  • One year of successful study at bachelor level at a recognised institute, or equivalent
