New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Social and Community Services) (Level 4)
This one-year health and wellbeing course will provide students with the foundation knowledge, skills, and practical experience required to work alongside individuals, families, and wh?nau accessing social and community services.
Students gain a wide range of transferable skills essential to the role of a support worker and select from one of the following strands to further strengthen their learning:
Mental health and addiction support. Apply mental health and/or addiction tools and strategies when working alongside tangata, family, and wh?nau to support autonomy, foster hope, and develop resilience.
Social services. Apply community and social services tools and strategies when working alongside tangata, family, and wh?nau to support autonomy, identify goals, reduce vulnerability, and build resilience or achieve aspirations.
A key benefit of this programme is the flexibility in how it is delivered. Students study face-to-face with tutors and their peers two days a week and have three days for independent study or placement. For those already employed in a health care support role, this programme can be undertaken online.
Students will undertake 200 practicum hours in a work setting relevant to their selected strand to apply their knowledge and skills, enhance their learning, and develop professional practice.
We welcome all new students with an induction at our Hamilton City Campus at the start of the programme.

Level 9 and 10 (Master’s degree and Doctoral degree)

- Condition: Must study at least 30 weeks in New Zealand
- Most eligible international students can work up to 25 hours per week during study and full-time during scheduled breaks, only if their student visa includes work rights.
- Foundation, pathway and short courses have different rules.
- Not allowed for part time students.
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
Level 6 Admission Requirement:
Completed Year 12 or equivalent.
Based on study completed after school (tertiary study)
- Completed the New Zealand Diploma (Level 5);
- Or a recognised equivalent.
Level 7 Admission Requirement:
Candidates are required to:
i) have successfully completed a bachelor degree from a New Zealand Institution or an approved and accredited overseas institution; or
ii) Successfully completed a Level 6 or 7 Diploma and relevant work and/or life experience (equivalent to a bachelor degree); or
iii) Evidence of equivalent practical, professional or educational experience as approved by the Centre Director or authorised nominee.
Concurrent programmes:
IELTS 5.5 with a minimum of 5.0 in all bands, or equivalent
Programmes level 4 and below:
IELTS 5.5 with a minimum of 5.0 in all bands, or equivalent
Programmes levels 5 to 7:
IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all bands, or equivalent
Programmes level 8 and above:
IELTS 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in all bands, or equivalent
Additional requirements:
2 year validity period for all assessments. External bodies may influence some programme specific IELTS levels. You must provide evidence of your proficiency in the English language.
