Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing

A studio-academic, terminal degree program, the Bluegrass Writers Studio™ low-residency MFA in Creative Writing equips students with the training necessary to become regularly publishing writers, educators, business professionals and more. Workshops, contemporary literature courses, and residencies focus on advanced craft, contemporary literature, publishing, the literary marketplace, and professional development. The program is regularly ranked among the top low-residency MFA programs in the country, and it has twice been named Best Low-Res MFA Program by Intelligent.com (2022, 2023). With live workshops, in-person and online open mics, a student-run literary journal, and opportunities for 100% remote publishing internships, Bluegrass Writers Studio™ has created a writer’s community without the commute.

Along with earning a degree of expertise in writing short and book-length poetry and/or prose, graduates will have a working understanding of the literary marketplace. The goal of the Bluegrass Writers Studio™ is to prepare students to become better writers, but an MFA in Creative Writing can open doors to a variety of careers including education, law, and roles in the medical and business sectors.

Our faculty and staff are the foundation behind EKU’s mission as a School of Opportunity and longstanding reputation as a caring and supportive campus community. A career at EKU not only provides opportunities to participate in meaningful work, but offers a variety of benefits and perks for employees and their families.

  • Located off-site but close to campus, the BluMine Health Clinic provides preventative, acute and chronic care services with zero co-pays for employees on EKU’s health plan, and their spouses and children. Because the Clinic is exclusive to members, wait times are short!
  • EKU employees enjoy generous paid time off, including major holidays and vacation time accruing at 10 days per year and increasing with more years of service. “EKU Time,” granted at the discretion of the University President, sometimes offers an alternate summer work schedule, spring break, and other days off throughout the year. Also, employees accrue one day per month of sick leave, take one floating holiday per year, and are permitted paid time off for bereavement leave, voting on election days and military leave.
  • EKU supports career development and the pursuit of higher education for employees and their families. Employees, and a spouse or dependent, are eligible for a tuition waiver of up to six credit hours per semester for academic courses taken at EKU. Additionally, an employee may transfer their tuition benefit, enabling their spouse or a dependent a tuition waiver of up to 12 credit hours per semester.
