Criminology, BA

Criminology is an exciting, multidisciplinary field that studies the creation, causes, and consequences of crime, as well as the institutions designed to address it. Hofstra's Criminology Program offers an undergraduate major and minor, and it is structured to provide students with a broad-based liberal arts education that draws from a variety of disciplines, including forensics, linguistics, philosophy, political science, psychology, and sociology.

Hofstra's Criminology curriculum centers on rigorous analytic and methodological skills that are rooted in the social scientific method. Our approach leads to a critical understanding of crime, its social and psychological context, and its relation to other social institutions, including but not limited to the criminal justice system.

Students with a criminology degree are prepared to begin careers in law, government, and nongovernmental agencies that deal with diverse issues in criminal justice, such as mass incarceration, rehabilitation and re-entry, firearms policy, human rights, community empowerment, and equitable and restorative justice. The program is also a superior foundation for graduate studies in numerous related fields.

PSW Opportunity

Post-Study Work visa or permit, allowing international students on F-1 visas to work in the US after completing their studies, typically through Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Eligibility:
To be eligible for OPT, students must have been enrolled full-time in a US educational institution for at least one academic year and be seeking work related to their major.

Duration:
Students can apply for up to 12 months of OPT, either before they finish their studies (pre-completion) or after graduation (post-completion).

STEM OPT:
Students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields can apply for an extended OPT period of up to 24 months.

English Language Proficiency: Demonstrate proficiency through one of the following:

TOEFL iBT: Minimum score of 80
IELTS: Minimum score of 6.5
PTE Academic: Minimum score of 53
Duolingo English Test: Minimum score of 120
Completion of ELS 112
Other recognized English proficiency tests and qualifications.
Note: Some programs may have higher proficiency requirements.
Standardized Test Scores (Optional):
SAT or ACT scores are optional for admission.
However, submitting these scores is required for consideration for merit-based scholarships.
