Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
Qualify for licensure in New York state and jumpstart your career as a counseling professional with a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT). This in-person 54-credit degree program features dynamic, practice-based courses led by dedicated faculty who are with you every step of the way. Gain the skills necessary to work with couples and families to explore and improve conflict resolution in their relationships. You’ll receive intensive academic and clinical training through your classes and an integrated internship that’s completed at the on-campus Counseling and Mental Health Professions Clinic. Courses for the marriage and family therapy master’s program are offered during fall and spring semesters, as well as three summer sessions and a January session.

PSW Opportunity
Post-Study Work visa or permit, allowing international students on F-1 visas to work in the US after completing their studies, typically through Optional Practical Training (OPT).
Eligibility:
To be eligible for OPT, students must have been enrolled full-time in a US educational institution for at least one academic year and be seeking work related to their major.
Duration:
Students can apply for up to 12 months of OPT, either before they finish their studies (pre-completion) or after graduation (post-completion).
STEM OPT:
Students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields can apply for an extended OPT period of up to 24 months.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
International students are invited to apply to Hofstra using the appropriate application system for their program of interest (more details are available on our application page). In addition to required applicant materials (which vary by program), international students must provide proof of English Language proficiency. Permanent residents who have been living in the US for a minimum of 3 years are exempt from this requirement. Acceptable means of proficiency include:
- TOEFL Exam, minimum 80*
- IELTS Exam, minimum 6.5*
- PTEA Exam, minimum 53*
- ITEP Exam, minimum 4*
- ELS 112 Certificate
- Bachelor’s or graduate degree from a regionally accredited US Institution
- Bachelor’s or graduate degree from an institution whose language of instruction is English
- Bachelor’s or graduate degree from English Speaking Countries (Australia, Canada [except Quebec/Montreal], Irish Republic, New Zealand and United Kingdom)
- Bachelor’s or graduate degree from Africa Anglophone countries (Botswana, Cameroon, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Melawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe)
- Bachelor’s or graduate degree from Commonwealth Caribbean Anglophone countries (Antigua, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, and Turks and Caicos).
*Some graduate programs require a higher level of proficiency.
