Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Adv. Cert.

The Hofstra Northwell School of Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies aims to be the global leader in interprofessional education, preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals. We will offer a post-graduate Certificate Program in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP).   Graduates are eligible for the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) national board certification examination. 

The Hofstra Northwell School of Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies will incorporate the diverse academic programs and infrastructure of Hofstra University and the significant clinical activities and educational resources of Northwell Health.

The post-graduate Certificate Program in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) track,  through an interprofessional learning model, will graduate PMHNPs who will be prepared to provide quality, holistic, scientifically sound, and patient-centered care while optimizing the health and well-being of diverse populations and communities for the betterment of humanity.

The focus of the PMHNP track is to prepare PMHNP graduates who will provide patient-centered quality care to individuals and families across the lifespan. The PMHNP role includes providing primary mental health care to patients seeking mental health services in a wide range of settings. Primary mental health care provided by the PMHNP involves relationship-based, continuous, and comprehensive services necessary for the promotion of optimal mental health, prevention and treatment of psychiatric disorders, and health maintenance. This includes assessment, diagnosis, and management of mental health and psychiatric disorders across the lifespan. (NONPF, 2013, 2017, 2022).

Through the values of leadership, scholarship, collaboration, innovation, excellence, global health, humanism, learning, courage, and diversity,  advanced practice nurses who complete the curriculum of the post-graduate certificate program will:

Integrate critical analysis of the findings from the sciences and humanities to improve advanced practice nursing and health outcomes.
Develop innovative practice by integrating principles of change throughout healthcare systems.
Demonstrate proficiency in the use of improvement sciences and peer review to achieve measurable health outcomes, including but not limited to value-based healthcare.
Apply investigative skills to translate new knowledge to improve practice and health outcomes.
Apply technology and scientific health information to coordinate and deliver personalized healthcare to a diverse global population.
Advocate strategies to impact global healthcare policy's ethical, legal, and social factors.
Collaborate as leaders and members of the interprofessional team to maximize communication and coordination of care to achieve optimal health outcomes.
Providing a full spectrum of evidence-based healthcare services throughout the population's life cycle served to optimize health outcomes.
As an advanced practice nurse, demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and ownership while providing patient-centered care that recognizes the diversity and respects consumer preferences.

PSW Opportunity

Post-Study Work visa or permit, allowing international students on F-1 visas to work in the US after completing their studies, typically through Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Eligibility:
To be eligible for OPT, students must have been enrolled full-time in a US educational institution for at least one academic year and be seeking work related to their major.

Duration:
Students can apply for up to 12 months of OPT, either before they finish their studies (pre-completion) or after graduation (post-completion).

STEM OPT:
Students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields can apply for an extended OPT period of up to 24 months.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

International students are invited to apply to Hofstra using the appropriate application system for their program of interest (more details are available on our application page). In addition to required applicant materials (which vary by program), international students must provide proof of English Language proficiency. Permanent residents who have been living in the US for a minimum of 3 years are exempt from this requirement. Acceptable means of proficiency include:

  • TOEFL Exam, minimum 80*
  • IELTS Exam, minimum 6.5*
  • PTEA Exam, minimum 53*
  • ITEP Exam, minimum 4*
  • ELS 112 Certificate
  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree from a regionally accredited US Institution
  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree from an institution whose language of instruction is English
  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree from English Speaking Countries (Australia, Canada [except Quebec/Montreal], Irish Republic, New Zealand and United Kingdom)
  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree from Africa Anglophone countries (Botswana, Cameroon, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Melawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe)
  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree from Commonwealth Caribbean Anglophone countries (Antigua, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, and Turks and Caicos).

*Some graduate programs require a higher level of proficiency.

  • Duolingo score of 120 or higher
