Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Marketing

The research, which must be the candidate's own work, is written up as a thesis and may include papers published or intended to be published. The thesis is required to present the case for the research, outline the research was undertaken and the findings and conclusions of that research. There is no course work for this degree.

Marketing is essential for attracting customers to purchase a company's products or services. It helps to create strong, unique brands that will stand out from their competitors in the crowded global marketplace.

Marketing is far more than just selling or advertising – ultimately, it is marketing that decides what products and services an organization will offer, to which customers, at what price, using which channels.

In the first year you'll take part in a Marketing Tradeshow where you'll put theory into practice. In this fun assignment, you'll work in a team to develop an innovative idea for a new product or service based around a theme, such as tourism, board games, chocolate or sports. Your team will conduct customer research and plan a full marketing mix strategy, including product/packaging design, promotion, price and place of distribution. You'll be encouraged to dress up in costumes on the night, with prizes awarded for the best stand, best costumes, and best overall product.

Note:- International Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) students enrolled in recognized research programs at New Zealand universities may qualify for domestic student status. To hold domestic student status, international Doctor of Philosophy students must be resident in New Zealand during their study, except for temporary absences for the purposes of their research (conducting research and fieldwork appropriate to their course of study). The University defines a 'temporary absence' as no more than 12 months in total during the period of their candidature. A student enrolled in a New Zealand university but remaining resident overseas does not have domestic student status.
