New Zealand Certificate in Information Technology (Essentials)

This certificate provides you with internationally relevant skills and knowledge, which are transferable across a range of disciplines within IT. These are essential for working in a number of entry-level support roles including business support, retail roles, and support roles within the IT profession.

PSW Opportunity

Level 7 (Bachelor’s degree)

  • Duration: Equal to length of study (typically up to 3 years)
  • Requirement: minimum 30 weeks full time study in NZ

Level 7 (Graduate Diploma)
Eligible for PSWV
Conditions:

  • Must also hold a Bachelor’s degree (NZ or overseas)
  • Duration: Up to length of study (typically 1 year)

Level 8 (Postgraduate Diploma)

  • Duration: Equal to length of study, OR
  • Up to 3 years in some cases (if part of higher qualification pathway)

Level 9 and 10 (Master’s degree and Doctoral degree)

  • Duration: 3 years
  • Condition: Must study at least 30 weeks in New Zealand

- Most eligible international students can work up to 25 hours per week during study and full-time during scheduled breaks, only if their student visa includes work rights.

- Foundation, pathway and short courses have different rules.

- Not allowed for part time students.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

For this programme, you will need the following:

1. Be 16 years old by the time the programme starts

2. A minimum of 4 years of secondary education

3. Completed NCEA Level 1  

4. If English is not your first language, you will need one or more of the following:

  • Have achieved NCEA Level 3 and New Zealand University entrance
  • Be able to provide evidence you satisfy our criteria for existing English proficiency
  • Have achieved at least one English proficiency outcome in the last two years

Don't meet these requirements? We also accept:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Computing (User Fundamentals) (Level 2); or
  • New Zealand Certificate in Computing (Foundation User) (Level 2); or
  • New Zealand Certificate in Computing (Intermediate User) (Level 3); or
  • New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 3); or
  • Provide equivalent Certificate in Computing; or
  • Provide sufficient evidence to be eligible for special or discretionary admission.

Recommended: hold appropriate assessment standards in Digital Technologies Level 2.
