BA (Hons) English Language and Journalism
In our so-called ‘post-truth’ era of fake news and alternative facts, words have become removed from their original meanings and journalists face a number of challenges in today’s globalized world. Our BA English Language and Journalism degree introduces you to the scientific study of the English Language and allows you to examine human communication in different contexts. You’ll develop a range of journalistic skills while exploring the ways language reflects society and how it is used for different purposes.
In your first year, you’ll be introduced to the practical craft of journalism and explore the law and ethics surrounding journalism alongside core English Language modules. You’ll also explore the diversity of use of the English language including regional variants, pidgin and creole English, language and ethnicity, and slang and street English. Our journalism team is highly experienced practitioners, who’ll help you develop the skills to produce work in different styles and for diverse markets. You’ll learn how to source stories and get hands-on experience as part of a vibrant student community and through work placements. You’ll take part in News Lab workshops, conduct interviews, write features, and join lively group discussions.
Study abroad
Taking a year’s study abroad is an excellent opportunity to broaden your understanding of the world. Living in another country opens up fresh perspectives and helps create global citizens. For our English Language and Journalism students, it will enable you to develop your skills in your chosen language and immerse yourself in the culture and everyday life of that country. Recent students have studied in Japan and Korea.

A Level
- BCC - Requires Maths A level. Other A Levels may come from a selection of either Engineering or Technology, Science, Design, Computing, or Business related subjects. General studies/critical thinking not accepted.
BTEC
- DMM - Requires Extended Diploma in Engineering (DMM) to include Distinction in Further Maths
GCSE: Grade 4/C in English, Mathematics, and Science.
Foundation
- Completion of the Standard XII Certificate with 50% or above
- IELTS 4.5 with no less than 4.0 in any band
Undergraduate (year 1)
- Completion of the Standard XII Certificate with 60-70% depending on points tariff required by the UH course. Some courses may require specific subjects
- IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band for standard courses – some courses require higher
- Standard XII English with 65% will also be accepted
Undergraduate (year 2/3)
- Depending on qualifications and course - usually require 2/3 year Diploma post-Standard XII to be considered
