B.SC (HONS) BIOCHEMISTRY WITH STUDIES IN THE USA

Biochemistry is the foundation for understanding all biological processes. The knowledge and methods developed by biochemists are applied to all fields of medicine and agriculture as well as many chemical and health related industries. Biochemistry is unique in providing teaching and research in both protein structure and function, and genetic engineering - the two basic components of the fast expanding field of biotechnology.

This course includes a year of study in the USA at the University of Toledo in Ohio. This exchange programme has been running for over 35 years. The University of Toledo is considered to be a top global player for taking research from the laboratory to the world, and is recognised by the American Society of Landscape Architects as one of the 22 most beautiful landscaped campuses in the USA. The University of Toledo is based in Ohio and just an hour's drive from Detroit - the largest city in Michigan. Detroit has a major international airport, hosting one of the largest airline hubs in the country, meaning that travel around the USA and further afield whilst you are on exchange is very easy. Situated on the western trip of Lake Eerie, Toledo is less than a five-hour drive from Toronto and Chicago.

This degree is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology. Accredited degree programmes contain a solid academic foundation in biological knowledge and key skills, and prepare graduates to address the needs of employers.

Job Opportunity Potential

This course is ideal if you are interested in a career in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, food or brewing industries, as well as in clinical or other biomedical areas such as forensic science and analytical biochemistry. Our graduates are employed across bioscience by companies such as AstraZeneca and the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute, and many carry on to further study. Additionally, biochemists with knowledge of physiology are in demand in sports science, healthcare and hospitals and in the pharmaceutical industry, as well as in research establishments and other areas of bioscience. Others who spend their second year in the US return stateside to complete higher degrees at Toledo or other institutions.

PSW Opportunity

  • 2 Years PSW is applicable after completing a minimum duration of 9 months course (like- Undergraduate, Postgraduate Level)
  • 3 Years PSW is applicable after completing PhD level courses.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

GCSE

English language and mathematics at grade C or 4 or above

You must fulfil our GCSE entry requirements as well as one of the requirements listed below

Undergraduate

The following grades are normally required (exam board in brackets): 50% (West Bengal), 55% (ISC, awarded by CISCE), 60% (CBSE), 65% (all other state boards) for undergraduate study.
