While IELTS is a compulsory requirement for all Indian subcontinent students considering Australian study options, it is highly recommended even for students proceeding to UK or New Zealand. Unlike TOEFL (which is not acceptable for the Australian Visa), IELTS is a pen and paper test which assesses the student's ability with various components of English: Speaking, Listening, Writing and Reading. The test is conducted at several locations in India and in Bangladesh. British Council is the only testing body in Eastern India and it conducts two tests each month at Kolkata, Hyderabad and one test each quarter in Patna. Tests are also held a few times in a year in Guwahati and in Bhubaneswar. Registrations for the tests in Kolkata can be done with British Council at Kolkata, Hyderabad and for the tests in Patna is done with the Global Reach office at Patna which is also the IELTS Information and Registration Centre for the British Council at Patna. Several students despite having very good understanding of English Language seem to be nervous about the IELTS. Global Reach counsellors feel that most of the students who have studied in good schools and have grown up in English medium environment do not really need any training for the test.
