Australia GS Call: Why getting prepared before the call matters
With hundreds of thousands of Student visa applications being processed each year, students should take their GS preparation seriously.
The GS (Genuine Student requirement) is part of Australia’s Student visa procedure. It is important to start preparing for the GS call much before and the preparation must begin with knowing your application well. One must be thorough enough to discuss about education, work history, the reason behind choosing the course, future plans, finances and other relevant things. Communication should be natural and spontaneous, memorization not required. Understanding the study plan is important; one must have clarity and should present that clearly during the call.
Getting an offer from an Australian University is an important milestone.
But it isn't the final step.
Before you start packing your bags, there is another part of the process that deserves proper attention
Showing that your study plans make sense for you
This is where the Genuine Student requirement comes in.
The Australian Department of Home Affairs says the GS requirement applies to Student visa applications lodged from 23 March 2024. Applicants must demonstrate that they are genuine applicants for entry and stay as students and understand that Studying in Australia is the primary reason for their Student Visa.
In 2024-25, 473,634 Student visa applications were finalised, according to the Department of Home Affairs.
What does the GS Assessment look at?
The Department of Home Affairs looks at the student's individual circumstances.
This includes them
- current circumstances
- reasons for choosing the course and education provider
- understanding of studying and living in Australia
- expected benefit from completing the course
- immigration history
- visa compliance and other relevant circumstances
The Department also says that statements supported by evidence carry more weight when assessing the GS requirement.
That is why
Preparation matters

Australia's Student Visa System is being closely managed
For the first six months of the 2025-26 academic year, Australia recorded 205,382 Student visa applications, according to the Department of Home Affairs that was broadly stable compared with 203,835 in the same period of 2024–25.
The Department says this stabilisation reflects measures taken for the integrity and sustainability of the international education sector, including the Genuine Student requirement and other integrity measures.
India remains a major student market
There is another useful fact here for an Indian student.
According to Australia's Department of Education, 145,012 Indian students commenced study in Australia in 2025.
India was the second-largest source country after China and in the year-to-date June 2026 data, Indian students accounted for 16% of international students studying in Australia.
It means there are thousands of students from India making similar study plans. But every student's GS assessment is still based on their own circumstances.
This is where the GS call comes in
Take the call seriously. There is no second chance.

The bigger picture
Australia remains a major destination for international students. The Department of Education recorded 687,810 international students Studying in Australia in the year to June 2026, although this was 7% lower than the same period in 2025.
With 234,038 commencements recorded in the same period, there are still students arriving from around the world to begin their studies. For a student, however, these numbers are background.

FAQs
Is the GS Call the same as the Genuine Student requirement?
Yes, GS call is in absolute alignment with the Genuine Students requirement.
Is there a first-attempt GS Call pass rate?
There is no published Australian Government statistic establishing a national first-attempt GS Call pass rate. Therefore, students should not rely on claims online about a specific percentage.
What happens if I don't clear a GS Call?
The outcome depends on the organisation conducting the call and the circumstances of the student. A provider-level call should not automatically be equated with a Student visa refusal.
Why is GS preparation important?
The Department considers factors including your circumstances, immigration history, course and provider choice, understanding of studying and living in Australia and the benefits of the course. Supporting evidence is given greater weight when assessing GS claims.
Should I memorise GS answers?
No. Your responses should be accurate, relevant to your circumstances and consistent with your application and supporting documents.
