Important UK Visa Updates: New Maintenance Requirements & Graduate Route Changes

The UK government has announced key updates to its Immigration Rules in the latest Statement of Changes published on 14 October 2025. These adjustments directly impact international students applying for UK study visas and post-study work options in the coming months and years.

Let’s break down the two most important updates for students planning to study in the UK

1. Increase in Maintenance Requirements (Effective 11 November 2025)

From 11 November 2025, students applying under the ‘Student’ visa route will need to show higher financial proof to meet the maintenance requirement.

Updated Financial Requirements:

  • Studying in London: £1,529 per month (for up to 9 months)
  • Studying outside London: £1,171 per month (for up to 9 months)

The maximum amount that can be offset for accommodation will also rise in line with these changes — now set at £1,529.

These new figures ensure that international students have sufficient funds to cover their living expenses in the UK, reflecting current cost-of-living trends.

For detailed guidance on how to meet financial and maintenance requirements, students are encouraged to visit UKCISA (UK Council for International Student Affairs).

2. Changes to the Graduate Route (Effective January 2027)

From 1 January 2027, the Graduate Route — which allows international students to stay and work in the UK after completing their degree — will undergo significant changes for some applicants.

Updated Post-Study Work Durations:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree graduates: 18 months (reduced from 2 years)
  • PhD or Doctoral graduates: 3 years (no change)

These updates align with the Immigration White Paper (May 2025), which proposed recalibrating post-study work durations to balance education and employment opportunities in the UK.

It’s important to note that students applying for the Graduate Route before 1 January 2027 will still be eligible for the current two-year post-study work period.

What This Means for Students
  • If you’re planning to apply for a UK student visa: Make sure you meet the new financial criteria if applying on or after 11 November 2025.
  • If you’re planning your post-study career in the UK: Apply for the Graduate Route before January 2027 to benefit from the current two-year stay period.

The UK remains a top global study destination, offering world-class education, post-study opportunities, and a welcoming environment for international students — but being aware of policy timelines ensures you make informed decisions.
