MSc in Clinical Periodontics

Periodontics is one of the fastest growing areas in dentistry and patient expectations are high. The Master of Science (MSc) courses in Periodontics will give you the crucial core skills needed to stand out in this specialist area of practice.

It will equip you with the skills and knowledge to diagnose and manage periodontal patients, and perform advanced periodontal procedures competently.

As part of the course, you will be exposed to advanced and unique training, benefiting from building up experience for treating periodontal patients, and simulated patients in state-of-the-art facilities at our Dental Hospital in central Birmingham. This includes advanced periodontal surgery, regenerative therapy, soft tissue and bone augmentation and implant placement.

Taught by renowned academics and experts in the field, you will learn how to use advanced technologies through a range of innovative methods. You will be exposed to an intensive mix of lectures, seminars and practical workshops using animal and cadaveric specimens and techniques, as well as other contemporary ways of managing periodontal patients.

We ensure you receive a well-rounded and robust education through in-depth seminars and interactive problem-based scenarios that require periodontal knowledge, clinical skills and proficiency level, with a multidisciplinary approach in order to achieve a safe evidence-based treatment and high patient satisfaction.

You will also have the opportunity to discuss with peer students from other courses for a multidisciplinary approach and develop sound judgement based on evidence.

Students enrolling in the clinical course will be required to perform periodontal procedures on patients as part of the Advanced Clinical Practice Modules 1, 2 and 3. This is available under supervision only for GDC registered clinicians at the College’s Dental Hospital in central Birmingham. 

Teaching styles include clinical case discussions, close mentoring, chair-side guidance, and small group works that emphasise the importance of the evidence based clinical practice.

The programme concludes with the completion of a research project and the publication of a dissertation.
