Study in Thailand: A cost-effective and emerging destination for international students

Do people really go to Thailand to study?

This was the question Rakesh asked when he walked into our office seven years ago.

He was not the first person to ask us this question. When most people think about Thailand, images of delicious food, sandy beaches, vibrant nightlife, and exciting water sports come to mind. For decades, Thailand has been projected primarily as a holiday destination.

In recent years, it has become an even more popular tourist destination for Indians, especially with visa exemptions for tourists making travel easier.

All of that is true.

But what many people don’t realize is that Thailand has also quietly emerged as a growing study destination for international students.

Study in Thailand

Higher education opportunities in Thailand

Thailand offers a diverse higher education system with public, autonomous, and private universities. These institutions provide a wide variety of programs across disciplines such as Business, Information Technology, Engineering, Design, Music, Health Sciences, and Hospitality Management.

Undergraduate programs typically last four years, while postgraduate programs usually range between one and two years.

According to the Asia-Europe Meeting Education Secretariat, Thailand continues to strengthen its position as an international education hub by expanding English-taught programs and welcoming students from across the world.

Why international students choose to study in Thailand?

Many students today are actively exploring affordable and accessible alternatives to traditional Western destinations. For those looking for a balance between quality education and reasonable costs, studying in Thailand can be an attractive option.

Thailand’s geographical proximity makes it extremely convenient for Indian students. The travel time is significantly shorter compared to many other popular study abroad destinations.

For example, it took Rakesh only 2.5 hours to reach Bangkok from his hometown.

Thailand, often referred to as the Land of Smiles, is known for its welcoming culture and friendly people. It is widely regarded as one of the safest and most hospitable countries in the region.

The country is highly cosmopolitan and has become increasingly diverse over the years, welcoming students and professionals from across the globe.

One of the biggest advantages for Indian students is the affordability of the Thai Baht compared to currencies like the US Dollar, Euro, or British Pound.

This favourable exchange rate makes studying in Thailand financially accessible for many families.

Another major attraction is the relatively low tuition cost. In many cases, tuition fees can start from around INR 5 lakhs or sometimes even lower, which is extremely rare in many other international study destinations.

Additionally, most universities offer scholarships for international students, helping reduce the financial burden further.

Why Study in Thailand

Flexible English test requirements

Many universities in Thailand waive English language test requirements for students from the Indian subcontinent. This simplifies the application process and allows students to apply more easily without the pressure of additional standardized tests.

Affordable housing and cost of living

The cost of living in Thailand is significantly lower than in countries like the UK, the US, or Australia. Students often find that accommodation, food, and transportation are very affordable.

Overall, the annual cost of studying in Thailand can range between INR 5–8 lakhs, making it nearly 70% more affordable than many Western study destinations while still offering a comfortable lifestyle.

Efficient and affordable transportation

Thailand also boasts an excellent public transportation system, especially in cities like Bangkok. Students benefit from efficient metro systems, buses, and affordable local travel options that make daily commuting convenient.

Rakesh’s journey: From uncertainty to opportunity

Rakesh had completed his Year 12 exams the year before he came to us. Apart from academics, he was also deeply passionate about music and was already performing with several bands in his city.

However, he had a gap of a few years between his Class 10 and Class 12 examinations. His dream was to pursue an Information Technology course abroad, but the countries he initially considered posed admission challenges due to various reasons.

After careful evaluation and discussion, we decided to explore Thailand as a study destination.

The university he eventually applied to was a private institution offering STEM and Humanities programs.

He qualified for a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology program and was confident about succeeding in the field. To prepare himself further, he also enrolled in short-term IT courses in his hometown before beginning his degree.

The entire admission process went smoothly. The student visa process for Thailand was relatively straightforward, and he did not have to appear for any English language tests.

Studying in Thailand during the pandemic

Rakesh initially attended his classes in person, but soon the world was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite the uncertainty, he chose to remain in Bangkok and continue his studies. During this period, he also completed internships related to the IT sector, which helped him gain practical experience alongside his academic coursework.

When asked about his experience studying in Thailand, this is what he shared:

“Studying in Thailand has several advantages. The cost of living and tuition fees are generally lower compared to many Western countries, and the country offers a vibrant lifestyle with a diverse culture, great food, and plenty of travel opportunities.”

Job opportunities after studying in Thailand

Today, Rakesh has successfully secured a job in the Information Technology sector in Thailand.

However, he is also honest about the challenges international students may face when searching for employment.

“When it comes to jobs, it can be challenging for international students in Thailand. Many companies prefer hiring Thai nationals because of language requirements and work permit regulations. Even if you graduate from a Thai university, securing a job can sometimes be difficult unless you have specialised skills or extensive experience.”

Despite these challenges, Rakesh managed to enter the IT sector through networking, persistence, and practical experience gained during his internships.

Unlike many Western countries, universities in Thailand usually do not host large on-campus placement fairs, although they do have career support cells that guide students in their job search.

Cultural experiences and lifestyle benefits

Beyond academics, Thailand offers an enriching cultural and lifestyle experience for international students.

Known as the Land of Smiles, the country is famous for its warm hospitality, rich traditions, ancient temples, colourful festivals, and world-renowned cuisine.

Indian students often find familiar cultural elements such as spicy curries, Buddhist influences that reflect historical ties with India, and a growing Indian community in Bangkok.

Thailand’s natural diversity also makes it an exciting place to live. From the northern mountains to the southern islands, the country offers beaches, forests, and vibrant cities.

Students can easily travel across Southeast Asia to destinations such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, and Cambodia, as regional travel is affordable and well connected.

These experiences help students develop independence, cultural adaptability, and a global perspective, which are valuable skills in today’s interconnected world.

Is Thailand the right study destination for you?

Like every country, studying in Thailand has both advantages and challenges.

However, for students who are looking for affordable international education, a safe environment, a relatively simple student visa process, and a vibrant lifestyle, Thailand can be an excellent option.

Sometimes the best study abroad destinations are not the most obvious ones. As Rakesh’s journey shows, exploring alternative pathways can lead to meaningful opportunities and successful global careers.
