Master of Social Work (Professional)

This programme is designed for those who want to become a qualified social worker. If you already hold a bachelors degree with study in a relevant discipline such as social science, sociology, psychology, health science or human services then this programme can offer you a two-year pathway into the profession.

You will gain essential knowledge and understanding of the values, theories and interventions that underpin social work practice. The programme will teach the skills to be a critical and reflective practitioner who is able to contribute to any field of social work practice.

PSW Opportunity

Level 7 (Bachelor’s degree)

  • Duration: Equal to length of study (typically up to 3 years)
  • Requirement: minimum 30 weeks full time study in NZ

Level 7 (Graduate Diploma)
Eligible for PSWV
Conditions:

  • Must also hold a Bachelor’s degree (NZ or overseas)
  • Duration: Up to length of study (typically 1 year)

Level 8 (Postgraduate Diploma)

  • Duration: Equal to length of study, OR
  • Up to 3 years in some cases (if part of higher qualification pathway)

Level 9 and 10 (Master’s degree and Doctoral degree)

  • Duration: 3 years
  • Condition: Must study at least 30 weeks in New Zealand

- Most eligible international students can work up to 25 hours per week during study and full-time during scheduled breaks, only if their student visa includes work rights.

- Foundation, pathway and short courses have different rules.

- Not allowed for part time students.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

  • An undergraduate degree.

You must have completed a bachelors degree in a relevant subject. Relevant subjects may include anthropology, education, gender studies, history, law, Mori studies, nursing, population health, psychology, sociology.

You will need a GPA of 5.0 or higher in at least 75 points in Stage III.

Other pathways to study

  • If you have not met the requirement you can still gain entry if you have attained an equivalent and relevant, practical, professional or scholarly experience.
