U.S. universities are primarily classified into two categories: Public/State and Private. Generally, tuition fees at public or state universities are lower than those at private institutions. The cost of tuition varies depending on the type of qualification and the specific university or school you choose. On average, you can expect to pay between $8,000 and $55,000 (USD) per year for tuition (indicative).

The living cost for international students in the U.S. varies from city to city. On average, the annual living expenses range from $10,000 to $18,000, which translates to about $1,000 to $1,500 per month.

Applicants from non-English speaking countries are required to prove their English language proficiency for higher education in the U.S. PTE, TOEFL and IELTS are some of the English Language Proficiency test that the students need to take to study in the USA.

U.S. colleges and universities offer three main intakes, which are sometimes referred to as semesters. The three intakes are:

• Fall: This is the most popular intake for Indian students, starting in September.
• Spring: Beginning in January, this intake is ideal if you miss the Fall intake.
• Summer: Available for select programs and colleges, the Summer intake typically starts in May.

The available funding and type of award differ across institutions. Some research programs may offer up to 100% coverage of tuition fees, along with partial support for living expenses. As an Indian student, there are several popular scholarship programs you can apply for to study in the U.S. These include the Fulbright-Nehru Fellowships, the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Program, the #YouAreWelcomeHere Scholarship, and the AAUW International Fellowships.

The U.S. Government offers Indian students the chance to study in the country, but you must first obtain a student visa, which depends on your age and course of study. There are three types of student visas: F-1, J Exchange, and M Student Visa.

The first step is to apply and be accepted by a SEVP-certified U.S. school. After acceptance, you’ll receive a Form I-20, which records your information in the SEVIS database.
