Master of Applied Science in Disaster Risk and Resilience
Lincoln University's Master of Applied Science is geared towards careers in research, teaching, local and central government, and consultancy. The University's focus on applied teaching and research provides the opportunity to undertake programmes of study that connect topics and applications in a wide range of areas - agriculture, industry, communications, transport, recreation and tourism and now, increasingly and essentially, in the management and conservation of our biosphere and it's resources, including international rural development issues.
DESCRIPTION:
The Disaster Risk and Resilience specialisation in the Master of Applied Science provides students with a holistic, comprehensive and integrated understanding of disaster management and risk reduction. The post-quake environment in the Canterbury region offers unique opportunities to develop synergies and address gaps in current tertiary education provisions and programmes. This specialisation is taught by staff at Lincoln University and the University of Canterbury. The programme will allow students to access the complementary knowledge and expertise sets of each university, as well as increasing the scope of research projects. The University of Canterbury has strong expertise in hazard processes, risk assessment, risk management and risk reduction, while Lincoln University has strengths in environment, planning, socio-economic factors, community engagement, policy and resilience.

- Must also hold a Bachelor’s degree (NZ or overseas)

Level 8 (Postgraduate Diploma)
- Duration: Equal to length of study, OR
- Up to 3 years in some cases (if part of higher qualification pathway)
Level 9 and 10 (Master’s degree and Doctoral degree)
- Duration: 3 years
- Condition: Must study at least 30 weeks in New Zealand
- Most eligible international students can work up to 25 hours per week during study and full-time during scheduled breaks, only if their student visa includes work rights.
- Foundation, pathway and short courses have different rules.
- Not allowed for part time students.
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
Whether you are considering a taught, taught/research or research-only Master’s degree, you will need a relevant degree with a B grade average in your 300-level courses and final year (full-time equivalent).
Taught Master’s degrees are usually 12-month full-time programmes. Like bachelor’s degrees, they are delivered and assessed through a series of taught modules and may include independent research in the specialised subject area.
