Bachelors of Engineering (Honours) / Biotechnology

UQ's respected Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) program is one of the most comprehensive in Australia for design, technology and innovation. Within this program you can specialise in chemical engineering.

In the Bachelor of Biotechnology, you’ll develop the skills and knowledge needed to translate innovative scientific ideas into commercially viable solutions.

Deepen your understanding of the key issues within biotechnology such as intellectual property, regulatory compliance, quality assurance and quality control. Learn to apply quality management systems in biotechnology so that products and technologies are safe and reproducible.

You’ll also learn how to assess the market potential and financial viability of new products or technical services such as vaccines, diagnostics, biopharmaceutical drugs, transgenic plants or innovations in stem cell therapy.

With a dual qualification in engineering and biotechnology, you'll be equipped for a wide variety of career opportunities in Australia’s thriving life sciences sector where you can contribute to pioneering new frontiers in health, agriculture, science, engineering, and beyond.

Campus Information

St Lucia

Situated on 114 hectares of Brisbane River-bound land, UQ’s main campus is a vibrant mix of majestic sandstone buildings and contemporary architecture, landscaped gardens and lakes. Fanning out from the heritage-listed Great Court, you’ll find modern teaching and research facilities, including laboratories, lecture theatres, and Queensland’s largest research library. The expansive grounds are also home to a variety of sporting facilities, museums, cafes, and those famous Jacaranda trees. Post Study Work Steam Renames to Post Higher Education Work Steam.

  • Bachelor degree holders including honours can get upto 2 years of post study stay
  • Master by course work and extended (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 2 years
  • Masters by research (with a duration exceeding 2 years) and PhD holder can stay upto 3 years
  • The Maximum eligible age to apply for PSW will be reduced to 35 years of age from 50 years of age for all applicants

Due to the Australian Indian Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement signed by the 2 countries, according to which:

  • Indian students completing bachelor degree including honours can stay upto 2 years
  • Bachelor degree with First class honours in STEM including ICT can stay upto 3 years
  • Masters by coursework in extended researched (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 3 years
  • PhD students can stay upto 4 years

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Prerequisites

Queensland Year 12 (or equivalent)

  • General English subject (Units 3 & 4, C);
  • Mathematical Methods (Units 3 & 4, C);
  • and one of Chemistry or Physics (Units 3 & 4, C).

Studying Specialist Mathematics (Units 3 & 4, C) and both Chemistry and Physics is recommended as students will have increased flexibility in their studies.Students without Specialist Mathematics (or equivalent) may be required to undertake preparatory courses beyond the 80 units for the program and may not be able to complete the program in the minimum time frame without overloading or undertaking summer study.
