Bachelor of Health Information Management
La Trobe's Bachelor of Health Information Management combines the clinical and business sides of healthcare to prepare you for a career as a health information expert. You'll develop a comprehensive skillset covering areas like clinical classification, data analytics, health informatics and health systems management.
Build the foundation of your skills in health information management in your first year of study. Then deepen your technical and professional expertise throughout the rest of your degree, including 55 days of supervised professional placement.
With the perfect blend of expertise and experience, you'll graduate ready to work in all areas of healthcare – from hospitals and community health centres to specialist disease registries.
You'll learn:
Anatomy and physiology
Understand the fundamental internal and external structures of the body and how they function. Learn the language of medicine.
Health informatics and data analysis
Discover how to apply Health Information Technology (HIT) into a healthcare setting to aid the delivery of care. Build the skills to analyse health data and disseminate health information insights at local, state, national and international levels.
Health classification and clinical coding
Learn how to encode patient record information using a health classification system. Understand the international and local standards for recording and communicating health data.
Management of electronic health information systems
Gain the skills to manage electronic health information systems, such as understanding security, access and integration requirements.
Health information ethics and law
Investigate the ethical challenges and legal requirements of working with health data, including ways to ensure patients can control their health information.

PSW Opportunity
Post Study Work Steam Renames to Post Higher Education Work Steam.
- Bachelor degree holders including honours can get upto 2 years of post study stay
- Master by course work and extended (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 2 years
- Masters by research (with a duration exceeding 2 years) and PhD holder can stay upto 3 years
- The Maximum eligible age to apply for PSW will be reduced to 35 years of age from 50 years of age for all applicants
Due to the Australian Indian Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement signed by the 2 countries, according to which:
- Indian students completing bachelor degree including honours can stay upto 2 years
- Bachelor degree with First class honours in STEM including ICT can stay upto 3 years
- Masters by coursework in extended researched (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 3 years
- PhD students can stay upto 4 years
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
- Degree entry: Australian bachelor degree (or international equivalent) with a minimum of a C (60%) grade point average (GPA) in the final year PLUS three years of relevant managerial experience
- Professional entry: Applicants do not require an undergraduate degree but must have a minimum of 8 years' relevant managerial experience 6.0.
- Professional entry (no undergrad degree): International applicants must have a minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0. Please note that international students studying online are not eligible for an Australian student visa.
