New Zealand Sign Language - English Interpreting Major - Bachelor of Arts
Professional sign language interpreters are in high demand. Sign language interpreters are essential to ensure the Deaf community has access to New Zealand legal, educational and health systems. This major prepares you for a career as a sign language interpreter.
You become familiar with the Deaf community and culture, and helping you achieve proficiency in New Zealand Sign Language. In the second and third year you’re introduced to the interpreting profession, including the history of interpreting locally and internationally. You develop interpreting skills for a wide range of settings, and explore the ethical issues of sign language interpreting.

PSW Opportunity
- During study, all students on a student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during semester and full time during vacations.
- After completing Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree or Higher Qualification, a student will get a three years open post-study work visa.
- After completing Level 8 Post Graduate courses of 1 year, students get 1 year PSW.
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
For India
12 years of schooling with an overall average of 75% in four academic subjects, including a minimum 60% in English from All-India Senior Certificate (AISSC) - Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), or Indian School Certificate (ISC) - Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), or Indian State Boards - Karnataka, Maharashtra or West Bengal State Board Examinations.
All other Higher Secondary State Board Examinations require an overall average of 80% in four academic subjects with a minimum 65% in English.
Tertiary requirements
One year of successful study at bachelor level at a recognised institute, or equivalent, OR
Completion of 12yrs schooling plus 1yr of a Diploma with passes in all papers at a recognised institute, OR
Completion of 10yrs schooling and completion of a 2-3yr Diploma with passes in all papers at a recognised institute
60% in Y12 English from CBSE, CISCE, Karnataka, Maharashtra or West Bengal State Board Examinations.
65% from all other State Boards.
For Worldwide
- Cambridge International Examinations (CIE); or
- General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Levels; or
- International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB); or
- Other secondary qualifications assessed on a case-by-case basis
