International Year One (UTP II) Liberal Arts

The Faculty of Liberal Arts offers a wide range of programs, from traditional arts disciplines such as English and History to new and interdisciplinary fields of study such as User Experience Design. In all programs you’ll get both knowledge and know-how; all programs offer you opportunities to apply what you learn in the classroom to the real world.

PSW Opportunity

Eligibility for Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP):
Graduated from a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada.
Desire to stay in Canada temporarily for work.

Important Note:
Graduating from a DLI doesn't automatically qualify you for a PGWP.

Validity of PGWP:
Depends on the length of the study program or the expiry date of your passport, whichever comes first.

Duration of PGWP Based on Study Program Length:
Less than 8 months (or 900 hours for Quebec credentials): Not eligible for PGWP.
At least 8 months (or 900 hours for Quebec credentials), but less than 2 years: PGWP may be granted for the same length as the study program (e.g., a 9-month program results in a 9-month PGWP).
2 years or more: PGWP may be valid for 3 years.

Completion of Multiple Programs:
PGWP may combine the lengths of each program if:
Each program is PGWP eligible.
Each program is at least 8 months (or 900 hours for Quebec credentials) in length.

Important Restriction:
You cannot obtain a PGWP if you already had one after completing an earlier program of study.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

LIBERAL ARTS PROGRESSION REQUIREMENTS
You will transfer into the Honours Bachelor of Design program in the Faculty of Liberal Arts at Wilfrid Laurier University with 5.0 credits (10 courses) toward your degree upon successful completion of the  International Year One (UTP Stage II): Faculty of Liberal Arts (Honours BDes) program if you meet the following requirements:

User Experience Design

A minimum GPA of 5.00 (C) in each honours major course and a minimum overall GPA of 5.00 (C).
Completion of a minimum of 10 courses (5.0 credits) in the WLIC International Year One program, including the required course UX100. DD101, SOJE120, and PS101 are recommended. Students will be advised on course selection based on their intended major.
You will transfer into the Honours Bachelor of Design program in the Faculty of Liberal Arts at Wilfrid Laurier University with 5.0 credits (10 courses) toward your degree upon successful completion of the  International Year One (UTP Stage II): Faculty of Liberal Arts(Honours BDes) program if you meet the following requirements:

Liberal Arts

A minimum GPA of 5.00 (C) in each honours major course and a minimum overall GPA of 5.00 (C).
Completion of a minimum of 10 courses (5.0 credits) in the WLIC International Year One program, including one writing intensive course. Students will be advised on course selection based on their intended major.
Students may select their Wilfrid Laurier University program from the range of majors available in the faculty upon consultation with an advisor and will complete any additional required First Year courses for that program

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
The language of instruction at WLIC is English. Before being granted admission into a program at WLIC, you must demonstrate a suitable level of English proficiency. This can be done by obtaining one of the results shown in the table below. Individual band scores apply.
 
Direct Entry
If you meet the direct entry English language requirement and meet the relevant academic requirements for your country, you will be eligible for direct entry to Foundation (UTP Stage I) or International Year One (UTP II). Direct entry includes a non-credit support course called Introduction to our Learning Community (ILC101). This program is designed to be completed in three terms.
 
Integrated Entry
If you meet the integrated entry English language requirement and the relevant academic requirements for your country, you will begin Foundation (UTP Stage I) or International Year One (UTP II) and will take Introduction to our Learning Community (ILC101), two academic courses and two required integrated tutorials to support your academic courses in your first term of study. This program is designed to be completed in three terms.
