New Zealand Diploma in Wellness and Relaxation Massage (Level 5)

Students will learn the principles of anatomy and physiology, health and nutrition, and massage therapy. They will gain hands-on experience in our modern clinic, practising massage techniques on each other, as well as clients. Students will also learn basic business skills.

Massage academic staff are qualified with extensive industry experience, enabling students to learn best practice in preparation for graduating.

Students will graduate with the skills and knowledge to provide wellness and relaxation massage therapy services. They will also meet the requirements of Massage New Zealand (MNZ) to be a Registered Massage Therapist.

This programme is a prerequisite course for students who wish to pathway on to becoming therapeutic massage therapists.

Job Opportunity Potential

Graduates of this programme will be qualified to be employed or self-employed as wellness and relaxation massage therapists in a broad range of wellness and relaxation massage setting such as:

Home-based massage therapy or mobile clinics
Community based massage therapy clinics
Multi-disciplinary clinics
Sports settings (non-injury work)
Spa based massage therapy clinics
This programme provides a pathway to and is a pre-requisite for the New Zealand Diploma in Remedial Massage (Level 6) and the Bachelor in Massage Therapy (Level 7)

Further study can be undertaken in aroma science, reflexology and beauty/ spa therapy.

Students who wish to be employed as remedial massage therapist will be required to undertake further study.

PSW Opportunity

  • During study, all students on a student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during semester and full time during vacations.
  • After completing Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree or Higher Qualification, a student will get a three years open post-study work visa.
  • After completing Level 8 Post Graduate courses of 1 year, students get 1 year PSW.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Level 6 Admission Requirement:

Completed Year 12 or equivalent.

Based on study completed after school (tertiary study)

  • Completed the New Zealand Diploma (Level 5);
  • Or a recognised equivalent. 

Level 7 Admission Requirement:

Candidates are required to:
i) have successfully completed a bachelor degree from a New Zealand Institution or an approved and accredited overseas institution; or
ii) Successfully completed a Level 6 or 7 Diploma and relevant work and/or life experience (equivalent to a bachelor degree); or
iii) Evidence of equivalent practical, professional or educational experience as approved by the Centre Director or authorised nominee.

Concurrent programmes:
IELTS 5.5 with a minimum of 5.0 in all bands, or equivalent

Programmes level 4 and below:
IELTS 5.5  with a minimum of 5.0 in all bands, or equivalent

Programmes levels 5 to 7:
IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all bands, or equivalent

Programmes level 8 and above:
IELTS 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in all bands, or equivalent

Additional requirements:
2 year validity period for all assessments. External bodies may influence some programme specific IELTS levels. You must provide evidence of your proficiency in the English language.
