Master of Minimally Invasive Surgery

Adelaide University’s Master of Minimally Invasive Surgery is designed for surgeons who aspire to make minimally invasive techniques a central aspect of their practice.

Combining supervised clinical placements with research and online study, this degree offers a comprehensive clinical foundation in laparoscopic surgery – providing surgeons from various subspecialties with the expertise needed to excel in this advanced field.

You’ll emerge with a professional qualification that positions you for senior appointments in surgical units, where you’ll confidently and skilfully perform laparoscopic procedures.

The degree also offers opportunities for specialisation, allowing you to focus on an area of choice, such as colorectal surgery, renal transplantation, upper gastrointestinal surgery, vascular surgery, urology or gynaecology.

With access to state-of-the-art training facilities and expert guidance, you’ll develop the skills and knowledge to practise at the forefront of surgical innovation and patient care.

The campus encompasses precincts at both the east and west ends of the city. Post Study Work Steam Renames to Post Higher Education Work Steam.

  • Bachelor degree holders including honours can get upto 2 years of post study stay
  • Master by course work and extended (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 2 years
  • Masters by research (with a duration exceeding 2 years) and PhD holder can stay upto 3 years
  • The Maximum eligible age to apply for PSW will be reduced to 35 years of age from 50 years of age for all applicants

Due to the Australian Indian Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement signed by the 2 countries, according to which:

  • Indian students completing bachelor degree including honours can stay upto 2 years
  • Bachelor degree with First class honours in STEM including ICT can stay upto 3 years
  • Masters by coursework in extended researched (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 3 years
  • PhD students can stay upto 4 years

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, an applicant must:

  • be an experienced surgeon who have completed, or be within one year of completing, the Fellow of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) or Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRANZCOG) programs or equivalent;
  • have a surgical fellowship or consultant post with a major interest in minimally invasive surgery;
  • hold a clinical position (this is not automatically offered with the Master of Minimally Invasive Surgery and applicants are personally responsible for obtaining a suitable position);
  • register with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA);
  • be resident in Australia 

Additionally, all applicants must provide the following: 

  • current comprehensive curriculum vitae (CV);
  • 2 letters of reference;
  • evidence of having completed or be within one year of completing, the Fellow of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) or Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRANZCOG) programs or equivalent.
