As an M.A. student in the Department of English, you will be immersed in American & British literature, modernism, gender studies and so much more. We provide ample opportunities for research, professionalization and conference participation, and our mentorship program helps to set you up for success after graduation. Whether you are on our traditional English track or our Literature & Writing track, you will benefit from our small classes, individual attention from dedicated professors, an energetic and welcoming graduate community and our location in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh. Recent graduates from each track have gone on to careers in business, education nonprofits and journalism. Students also continue their education in top ranked law programs and doctoral programs in literature and composition and rhetoric.

Full-time students receive a 25% discount percent on their tuition. Additional funding is available through departmental and university assistantships and teaching fellowships.

PSW Opportunity

Post-Study Work visa or permit, allowing international students on F-1 visas to work in the US after completing their studies, typically through Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Eligibility:
To be eligible for OPT, students must have been enrolled full-time in a US educational institution for at least one academic year and be seeking work related to their major.

Duration:
Students can apply for up to 12 months of OPT, either before they finish their studies (pre-completion) or after graduation (post-completion).

STEM OPT:
Students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields can apply for an extended OPT period of up to 24 months.

GPA at 3.5 or higher
GPA for prerequisite courses of 3.5 or higher
GRE at 308 or higher. GRE scores must be from last 5 years.

The University requires the following minimum scores* for general admission consideration:
