Radford University

Radford, Virginia, United States

Educational Leadership Certificate

The Post-Professional Certificate in Educational Leadership is designed to provide specific background, education, and tools to licensed teachers to prepare them to address the needs of preK-12 students in a leadership or administrative capacity. The certificate includes coursework in school law, evaluation of instructional personnel, special education, school finance, and educational leadership. The certificate also includes a 240-hour internship in school administration.

The certificate provides participants with the necessary coursework to satisfy the Level 1, Option 3 requirements for endorsement in preK-12 Administration and Supervision under the Licensure Regulations for School Personnel in Virginia. The Level 1, Option 3, alternate route to licensure for school personnel allows an employing school division superintendent to recommend an individual for endorsement if the individual has a completed master’s degree, a current teaching license, passing scores on the School Leaders Licensure Assessment, and coursework in specified areas. The certificate program is not a state-approved educator preparation program at Radford University, and thus, the University will not submit paperwork for adding the endorsement to the individual’s teaching license; however, successful completion of the certificate program may enable a participant to be recommended by their superintendent for the endorsement from the Virginia Department of Education.

Job Opportunity Potential

Political science doesn't prepare students for A career. Political Science prepares you for DOZENS of careers.  How can we say that?  Because Political Science immerses you in the skills that employers want:

  • Critical thinking,
  • Information literacy,
  • Oral and written communication,
  • Ethical citizenship,
  • Problem solving,
  • Understanding of diversity/global issues,
  • Collaboration

Political Science majors get jobs. In fact, Political Science is a growth industry.  Many employers hire Political Science majors over others because our unique set of skills makes our majors ready to engage in high-level strategic work from Day One on the job.  Political Science majors are leaders, whose knowledge of history and culture assist them in dealing with clients and dealing with new market trends.  A survey  of employers for the American Association of Colleges & Universities  found that critical thinking, clear communication, and problem solving were more important than any particular undergraduate major in hiring decisions. These are exactly the skills developed and reinforced in Radford’s general education and Political Science curricula.
