How you will learn
The MRes in Engineering is delivered through a research-led learning environment designed to develop advanced technical expertise, independent investigation skills and professional research capability. The course combines structured academic support with a strong emphasis on self-directed study, allowing you to take ownership of your learning and research development.
A research-focused learning experience
From the outset, your learning is centred around developing the knowledge and skills required to design and deliver a substantial engineering research project.
In the early stages, you will focus on building a strong foundation in research methods, academic communication, project planning and critical analysis. As you progress, the emphasis shifts towards independent research and specialist technical investigation, enabling you to explore your chosen area in depth.
You will be encouraged to engage with real-world engineering challenges, applying theoretical knowledge to practical and industry-relevant problems.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
- You will normally need a good honours degree (typically 2:1 or above) in an engineering discipline or a closely related subject area. Relevant subjects include:
- Mechanical and motorsport engineering; electrical and electronic engineering; manufacturing engineering; civil and infrastructure engineering; construction and the built environment; robotics and automation; acoustics or audio engineering; materials engineering, or related applied science subjects.
Equivalent international qualifications and related technical disciplines may also be considered.

For International applicants - this course requires an ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) certificate. As part of the programme, you will learn to research, develop and apply new technologies, develop and promote advanced designs and design methods, introduce new and more efficient production techniques, initiate marketing and construction concepts, and pioneer new engineering services and management methods.
