Psychology BSc (Hons)

Psychology is the study of the human mind, focusing on the way it impacts human behaviour through our emotions, memories and thoughts. Through studies, observations and various research methodologies, modern psychologistis are able to address issues of human behaviouras well as the mind behind it. An ability that is pivotal in many industries.

Our British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited psychology BSc is designed to ensure our students develop the core understanding necessary to excel in this discipline. It offers an extensive curriculum, emphasising human behaviour and real world applications of psychology. We integrate theoretical psychology, techniques of psychological investigation and major areas of applied psychology.

At Aston,you have the flexibility to study modules that compliment your interests and personal career goals. Through the course, you’ll grow expertise in a broad range of research methodologies that benefit you in university and beyond. During your final year, you will gain specialist knowledge to support you as you conduct an exciting and original research project in your chosen field.

What you will study

Year 1: Begin your journey into this fascinating subject by studying the key topics that will form the basis of your Psychology degree. Covering biological psychology to an introduction to clinical psychology, you’ll learn about psychology as an academic history, how to articulate your gained knowledge of core theories and concepts and discover more about the possible graduate career pathways open to you and the attributes you’ll need to succeed in them.

Year 2: In your second year you will continue your psychology education journey by building on the core grounding you gained in your first year, as well as being introduced to exciting new subject areas such as the brain, behaviour, neuropsychology and learning. You’ll gain the skills required to communicate appropriate critical thinking, develop your ability to use a wide range of statistics and qualitative methods and acquire an advanced understanding of both historical and contemporary psychology theories and concepts.

Placement year (integrated into 4 year BSc): The placement year gives you the opportunity to gain valuable career boosting experience by setting your studies in a real world context of a working environment alongside professionals. You will get the chance to take your placement in a wide variety of settings such as research, clinical and forensic. Please see our placement year tab for more information.

Final Year: During your final year you will get the chance to conduct a final year project in an area of interest to you, with individual support from a member of staff. This will enable you to identify a research question and hypothesis, which you will then design, execute and report a sustained and independent project around.

In addition to the core Final Year Project module, you will also get the chance to pick from a variety of options that fit your interests and career goals. This will give you the ability to communicate a detailed, integrated and critical understanding of the issues in psychology.

Practice your video interview skills
The employers we work with are doing more and more video interviews – for obvious reasons. Video interviews can be awkward and scary, but it doesn't have to be that way. The more you practice, the more comfortable you become. We've got a host of online tools to help you get prepped.

PSW Opportunity

  • 2 Years PSW is applicable after completing a minimum duration of 9 months course (like- Undergraduate, Postgraduate Level)
  • 3 Years PSW is applicable after completing PhD level courses.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Undergraduate applicants

Typically, you may be exempt from taking a SELT such as IELTS, TOEFL etc, depending on:

A strong Class 12 English paper score (typically, 75-85% and above).
The Examination Board in India
The School you are applying to at Aston University
These exemptions do not apply to Aston Medical School MBChB Programme.

You can apply for Year 1 of an undergraduate degree after class 12 from either a National or State Examination Board.

Admissions tutors are looking for high marks in standard 10 and 12. The marks required vary depending on which Indian Board you studied with and which subject you are applying to. In general, applicants should score in the range of 75-85% average as a minimum.

Some degree programmes, such as engineering, sciences and languages, require specific subject backgrounds.

English Language Requirements
To be accepted onto our programmes, you must be able to satisfy the University's English language requirements. The level required will depend on the programme you are applying for.  We strive to make your application process as easy as possible, however in all cases we reserve the right to request an English language qualification and / or conduct an interview.
