Youth & Community Work - BA (Hons)

At Cardiff Met, the BA (Hons) Youth and Community Work is an exciting, forward-thinking degree which has recently been revalidated and endorsed. This course will fully prepare you to respond to the current and emerging needs of young people and communities, whilst training as a professional youth and community worker. If you are looking to make a difference to the lives of young people and play a key role in society, this degree could be for you. 

Throughout the degree you will learn about the key issues facing young people and wider communities in society. You will grow in confidence, whilst gaining the knowledge, skills and experience required to be a passionate, supportive and engaging youth worker. In each year of study, you will gain significant practical experience on professional placement to enhance your learning and employability, through our strong links and partnerships.

If you think that a career in Youth & Community work is for you but feel you do not yet have the qualifications, experience or confidence to start the BA (Hons) Youth & Community Work, you can begin your journey by first undertaking the one-year Foundation Certificate in Youth & Community Work? which prepares you to progress to the degree with confidence.

Please note: You will need to apply using a specific UCAS code if you wish to undertake the 4 years including foundation.

Job Opportunity Potential

The BA (Hons) Youth & Community course at Cardiff Met provides you with a JNC and Education Training Standards (ETS) professionally endorsed qualification in youth and community work that allows you to register with the Education Workforce Council (EWC). 

Professionally qualified Youth & Community workers are in high demand particularly given the strong commitment made by Wales Government. Many of our graduates find paid employment in the above professions whilst they are students, and promotion is often secured upon completion of their professional qualification.

Graduates from the programme can also progress to study at Masters and PhD levels at Cardiff Metropolitan University. The School of Education & Social Policy Masters Framework which offers a number of qualifying routes including MA Education (with pathways), MA Advanced Youth and Community Practice.

PSW Opportunity

  • 2 Years PSW is applicable after completing a minimum duration of 9 months course (like- Undergraduate, Postgraduate Level)
  • 3 Years PSW is applicable after completing PhD level courses.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

For India

  • Students with good grades in their Polytechnic / College of Technology Diploma (3- to 4-years in duration).
    OR
  • Students with good grades in their Indian Certificate of Education - awarded on completion of Standard X AND who have completed a recognised Foundation Course.
    OR
  • Students with good grades in their Higher Secondary School Certificates - Indian School Certificate (ISC) / Intermediate Certificate / Higher School Certificate / Higher Secondary Certificate / All India Senior School Certificate / Pre-University Course - awarded on completion of Standard XII

For Bangladesh

  • Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Intermediate with GPA 4.0 plus IELTS of 6.0 will be considered for Year 1 entry
  • A-Levels or International Baccalaureate
  • American High School Diploma with GPA 3.0 (grade B average) plus one of the following:
    • SAT 1 combined score of 1800 or above and a 6 score in the essay
    • ACT (American College Test) score of 20 or above
    • Advanced Placement Tests (Aps) with grade 3 or above in at least two relevant subjects

For Pakistan

  • Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Intermediate in Pre-Engineering or Pre-Medical stream with 60% pass 
  • Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Intermediate Science/Humanities/Commerce stream plus recognised Foundation Course 
  • A-Levels or International Baccalaureate.
  • American High School Diploma with GPA 3.0 (grade B average) plus one of the following:
    • SAT 1 combined score of 1800 or above and a 6 score in the essay
    • ACT (American College Test) score of 20 or aboveAdvanced Placement Tests (Aps) with grade 3 or above in at least two relevant subjects

Bachelor of Arts/Commerce/Science/Technology (two year) with 50% pass

For Sri Lanka

  • Students with good grades in their Sri Lankan General Certificate of Education (Advanced level).
    OR
  • Students with good grades in their Sri Lankan General Certificate of Education (Ordinary level) AND
  • who have completed a recognised Foundation Course.
    OR
  • Students who hold a Diploma in Social Work / Higher National Diploma (HND) / Advanced Diploma in Social Work.

For Nepal

  • Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Intermediate 60% pass.
  • A-Levels or International Baccalaureate
  • American High School Diploma with GPA 3.0 (grade B average) plus one of the following:
    • SAT 1 combined score of 1800 or above and a 6 score in the essay
    • ACT (American College Test) score of 20 or above
    • Advanced Placement Tests (Aps) with grade 3 or above in at least two relevant subjects

Students whose first language is not English will need to provide evidence of fluency to at least an IELTS 6.0 standard or equivalent.

Candidates who do not possess normal minimum entry qualification are interviewed and considered individually on the basis of their prior learning or working background.
