Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology
Lincoln University's specialist Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology degree prepares graduates for a great career in the wine sector.
Lincoln University delivered the first cool climate wine production programme in the English-speaking world, and we’ve been leading the way ever since.
The core of the degree covers basic science preparation through to advanced viticulture and wine science, pest and disease management, biometrics and wine chemistry. You can then tailor the rest of your degree using electives to fit your areas of interest and individual career aspirations.
Lincoln University’s Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology will also take you places. Our graduates are all over the world; from the Gibbston Valley to the Hunter Valley, from Blenheim to Bordeaux.
Practical Work
A period of Practical Work is a requirement of this qualification and full details are available in the handbook.
A summary of requirements is provided:
- 18 weeks in total
- 6 consecutive weeks in a commercial vineyard
- 6 consecutive weeks in a commercial winery
- 6 consecutive weeks in an allied industry e.g. wine bar or shop, winery laboratory, commercial vineyard or brewery.

- Duration: Equal to length of study (typically up to 3 years)
- Requirement: minimum 30 weeks full time study in NZ
Level 7 (Graduate Diploma)
Eligible for PSWV
Conditions:
- Must also hold a Bachelor’s degree (NZ or overseas)
- Duration: Up to length of study (typically 1 year)
Level 8 (Postgraduate Diploma)
- Duration: Equal to length of study, OR
- Up to 3 years in some cases (if part of higher qualification pathway)
Level 9 and 10 (Master’s degree and Doctoral degree)
- Duration: 3 years
- Condition: Must study at least 30 weeks in New Zealand
- Most eligible international students can work up to 25 hours per week during study and full-time during scheduled breaks, only if their student visa includes work rights.
- Foundation, pathway and short courses have different rules.
- Not allowed for part time students.
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
This is New Zealand's University Entrance qualification and is the minimum requirement to qualify for admission to a bachelor degree or to some of our diplomas. To recognise the disruption caused by COVID 19 there are some changes to UE for 2020. To qualify in 2020 you will need:
- NCEA level 3 (i.e. a minimum of 60 credits at level 3 or above plus 20 credits at level 2 or above); and
- A minimum of 12 credits at level 3 or higher in each of three approved subjects (this applies to 2020 only. In other years, 14 credits in each of three approved subjects is required); and
- Literacy – 5 reading credits and 5 writing credits at Level 2 or higher from standards on the NZQA list of university entrance literacy standards; and
- Numeracy – 10 credits from standards on the NZQA list of numeracy standards, or all three of the following unit standards: 26623, 26626, 26627.
