This Bachelor’s degree prepares you to work as a trained teacher in early childhood education settings.
You'll gain the competency, knowledge and skills to be able to apply for your teacher registration. You learn about the principles of the national early childhood curriculum, Te Wh?riki, and how to incorporate these into teaching and learning. You also deepen your understanding of child development, cultural diversity and individual curriculum areas, as well as the process of research and reflection to inform teaching practice.
Biculturalism is embedded into the course and during the three years you build on your understanding and appreciation of the concepts of te ao M?ori (M?ori world view) and m?tauranga M?ori (M?ori knowledge).
As part of the course you spend time working at an early childhood centre – we find the placements for you! With supervision from qualified teachers you develop your confidence in planning for, and documenting, children’s learning, and prepare yourself for professional practice.

PSW Opportunity
Level 7 (Bachelor’s degree)
- Duration: Equal to length of study (typically up to 3 years)
- Requirement: minimum 30 weeks full time study in NZ
Level 7 (Graduate Diploma)
Eligible for PSWV
Conditions:
- Must also hold a Bachelor’s degree (NZ or overseas)
- Duration: Up to length of study (typically 1 year)
Level 8 (Postgraduate Diploma)
- Duration: Equal to length of study, OR
- Up to 3 years in some cases (if part of higher qualification pathway)
Level 9 and 10 (Master’s degree and Doctoral degree)
- Duration: 3 years
- Condition: Must study at least 30 weeks in New Zealand
- Most eligible international students can work up to 25 hours per week during study and full-time during scheduled breaks, only if their student visa includes work rights.
- Foundation, pathway and short courses have different rules.
