Postgraduate Certificate in Antarctic Studies
Antarctic Studies is an internationally unique programme of study and inquiry that has been developed by staff at the University of Canterbury | Te Whare W?nanga o Waitaha in partnership with Antarctica New Zealand, with significant contributions from the other Aotearoa New Zealand universities.
The Postgraduate Certificate in Antarctic Studies attracts graduate students from a diverse range of disciplines and draws on the expertise of over thirty academic staff and guest speakers.
Students examine major scientific and environmental themes, as well as contemporary issues facing Antarctica. Participants will consider the major social, political, and legal issues facing the region. As part of the course, students travel to Antarctica for a unique field trip to gather data for reports and projects.
The PGCertAntaStud may be awarded with Distinction.

Job Opportunity Potential

This fund can help you gain invaluable work experience without worrying about the cost. This can cover:

PSW Opportunity
- During study, all students on a student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during semester and full time during vacations.
- After completing Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree or Higher Qualification, a student will get a three years open post-study work visa.
- After completing Level 8 Post Graduate courses of 1 year, students get 1 year PSW.
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
Academic entry requirements
The academic entry requirements for admission to this qualification are:
- A qualification is equivalent to a New Zealand university bachelor's degree with a minimum overall grade comparable to a B grade at UC and in a relevant subject area.
CAE or CPE
Score of 176 with a minimum of 169 in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
CCEL EAP
Level 2 with a minimum B+ grade.
FluentIQ
Overall mark of 8/10 with nothing less than a 7 being scored in a single category.
IELTS Academic
An average score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
ISE
ISE III with a pass in all 4 components.
LanguageCert
C1 Expert IESOL (LRWS) with HIGH PASS.
NZAPA
English New Zealand Accredited Pathway Assessment Level 3 (with no skill lower than Level 2).
NZCEL
Level 5.
Pearson Test of English (Academic)
PTE with an overall score of 58 and no PTE communicative skills score below 50.
TOEFL iBT
Total minimum score of 90, minimum score of 19 in reading, writing and listening. Please note UC only accepts TOEFL iBT scores from a single test date, not MyBest scores.
