Bachelor of Performing and Screen Arts (Screen Arts)

The Bachelor of Performing and Screen Arts (Screen Arts), is an in depth programme of study in which you will engage in a combination of creative, academic and practice based courses designed to develop skills and qualities vital to the creative screen sector.

In Year One you will learn about the filmmaking process and industry as a whole, the relationship between specialist skills, creative and critical thinking, and storytelling. From Year Two you will start to specialize, gaining depth in a particular area of the industry.

Specialisation Options: 

  • Animation: includes drawing, motion graphics, 3D animation, visual effects, life drawing and illustration
  • Camera and field sound: includes cinematography, location, new technologies, sound recording and colour grading
  • Post production: includes editing and post production sound
  • Production: includes production management, assistant directing, location management and scouting
  • Screenwriting: includes creative writing, writing craft

Highlights

  • Participate in hands on learning through film, television and small screen projects designed to emulate the real world
  • Experience different crew models such as working in small, tight teams, as well as in full industrial crews, as you would on a television or film set
  • The real world of performing and screen arts: work collaboratively with acting, dance, art department and costume students to gain real world, on set experience when working in the studio and on location
  • Small class sizes in specialist areas allow for lecturers to mentor students
  • Students interested in directing can take a mixture of lectures, screenings and workshops
  • Specialist programme designed to develop the necessary skills to succeed in the screen industry

PSW Opportunity

Level 7 (Bachelor’s degree)

  • Duration: Equal to length of study (typically up to 3 years)
  • Requirement: minimum 30 weeks full time study in NZ

Level 7 (Graduate Diploma)
Eligible for PSWV
Conditions:

  • Must also hold a Bachelor’s degree (NZ or overseas)
  • Duration: Up to length of study (typically 1 year)

Level 8 (Postgraduate Diploma)

  • Duration: Equal to length of study, OR
  • Up to 3 years in some cases (if part of higher qualification pathway)

Level 9 and 10 (Master’s degree and Doctoral degree)

  • Duration: 3 years
  • Condition: Must study at least 30 weeks in New Zealand

- Most eligible international students can work up to 25 hours per week during study and full-time during scheduled breaks, only if their student visa includes work rights.

- Foundation, pathway and short courses have different rules.

- Not allowed for part time students.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

FOR INDIA

  • All India Senior School Certificate (10+2) or equivalent with
  • with passes of 70% in 4 academic subjects.

FOR BANGLADESH

  • Successful completion of 1 year of tertiary study or 3 A Levels average or IB 25+

FOR NEPAL

  • Proficiency Certificate with a grade average of 80%

FOR SRI LANKA

  • Sri Lankan GCE A Levels with 3 passes in relevant subjects.

- Applicants must be at least 16 years of age when they begin their studies

English Language Requirements :

  • An equivalent of IELTS (Academic) with minimum band scores of 6.0 with no individual band lower than 5.5 from one test taken in the preceding two years,
  • Evidence of English language proficiency as outlined in the NZQA Rules on the Unitec English Language Requirements for International Students.
  • University Entrance Literacy: 10 credits at Level 2 or above in English or M?ori (5 in Reading, 5 in Writing); or
