Mechanical Engineering (Top-up) BEng(Hons)

If you have studied Mechanical Engineering for at least two years at university or higher education level, this is a one year course that helps you to build on your knowledge and skills to gain a degree. Unlike our other Mechanical Engineering courses the Top Up route is not directly accredited by the IMechE, though graduates may subsequently apply for professional registration with them.

Mechanical engineers play a vital role in our everyday lives. They design, manufacture and operate a wide range of products and processes, including:

High-performance cars
Lifesaving medical equipment
Railways
Green technologies
So much of our world is dependent on the skills of mechanical engineers. This one-year top-up course aims to give you the knowledge and skills you need to take the next step in your mechanical engineering career. We’ll give you the chance to understand how mechanical engineering contributes in to the design and operation of power stations, in making best use of our remaining fossil fuels, in the bio-medical industry, in rail transportation and in the manufacturing sector, whilst always looking at the impact on our environment. You’ll also explore the important role of business and financial management within the sector.

In addition, our Institute of Railway Research (IRR) within our Department of Engineering have been awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize for ‘innovative research in railway engineering to improve safety and efficiency through technological developments'. This is one of the most coveted distinctions in UK Higher Education.
