Master of Management (Journalism)
The Master of Management (Journalism) is a programme for those who are wanting to prepare for a career in journalism or those who have already been in the industry and are interested in specialising.
Who is it for?
You might already have an undergraduate degree in another field, but wish to get into journalism. You’ll get a basic grounding in the subject before taking on an internship giving you practical experience in the workplace.
Or you have already been working in the field but want to upskill. You might be doing general reporting but are interested in becoming a political reporter or getting into audio-visual reporting. You may wish to take courses in management or finance, for instance.
Flexible study
The Master of Management in Journalism is flexible so you can study either on campus or via distance learning. The programme can be studied part time or full time.
You’ll be in demand
The skills you learn with the Master of Management (Journalism) will be more current and relevant to the news media industry. To graduate, you’ll need to fulfil 60 credits which involve a practical placement at any media outlet.

The Wellington campus is in New Zealand's capital city and is a great place to live. PSW Opportunity
Level 7 (Bachelor’s degree)
- Duration: Equal to length of study (typically up to 3 years)
- Requirement: minimum 30 weeks full time study in NZ
Level 7 (Graduate Diploma)
Eligible for PSWV
Conditions:
- Must also hold a Bachelor’s degree (NZ or overseas)
- Duration: Up to length of study (typically 1 year)
Level 8 (Postgraduate Diploma)
- Duration: Equal to length of study, OR
- Up to 3 years in some cases (if part of higher qualification pathway)
Level 9 and 10 (Master’s degree and Doctoral degree)
- Duration: 3 years
- Condition: Must study at least 30 weeks in New Zealand
- Most eligible international students can work up to 25 hours per week during study and full-time during scheduled breaks, only if their student visa includes work rights.
- Foundation, pathway and short courses have different rules.
- Not allowed for part time students.
