Education (BEd)
The Acadia University Bachelor of Education is a 60-credit hour post baccalaureate program. It offers both Elementary and Secondary streams. Our program is designed to provide initial teacher preparation consistent with the needs of today's professional educator. Students may choose to complete their Education degree at Acadia through our 2-year program which starts in September and finishes in April in each of two years, or by enrolling in our 16-month program which begins in May and finishes in August of the following year.
Students in the Secondary program specialize in selecting both a major and a minor teaching discipline. Elementary Program students will be endorsed as a general Elementary School teacher. Some students may also seek dual endorsation by attaining the credentials to be certified to teach both as an Elementary teacher and a subject specific specialist at the Secondary level. Examples include, Music, Physical Education, and Fine arts.
Following the completion of your first degree you may choose to enrol in Acadia’s Bachelor of Education program. All over the world, education is considered an essential role in society – and teaching is one of our most noble and respected professions.
Acadia’s full-time Bachelor of Education (BEd) program is offered in either a 16-month-consecutive or a traditional two-year format. It offers rigorous training to provide you with the broad skill-set needed to teach young children, or the subject-specific expertise required to help students attain more advanced levels of education.
Society will always need teachers and those with the skills an education degree provides, so no matter the economic climate, training as a teacher will render you highly employable. Beyond the classroom, education careers are available in management, administration, research, and counselling roles. A background in education can also be useful for those who work with youth, or generally sharing knowledge. Examples include exhibition curators, community youth workers and social workers. All of these fields offer you the chance to help improve education systems and processes as each adapt to changes and rise to challenges.
Both the Elementary and Secondary programs provide an inclusive education focus intended to equip graduates to meet the individual needs of all learners.
In keeping with our commitment to acknowledging the diversity of the school population, we encourage applications from racial, ethnic, cultural, or other communities that are underrepresented in the teaching profession.
