Technical Diploma (TD) in Aeronautics-Professional Pilot

If you’d like to build your flight experience for employment in the aviation industry, this diploma program can give you the training and experience you need to get started. Your training includes FAA approved 141 flight training for Private Pilot, Instrument Rating and Commercial Pilot Multi-Engine and Single-Engine, so you’ll have flight experience and certifications for your first professional pilot job. You’ll be well prepared for a variety of interesting career options. If your goal is to become an airline pilot, this program can offer an alternative pathway to our Aeronautics-Pilot Training associate degree to acquire the necessary flight hours you’ll need to be eligible for those positions.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Aeronautics Tour

Prior to program admission, you must complete a tour and a program overview session, and should review the program guides

Pilot Declaration and Intent

You must complete the Declaration & Aeronautics Pilot Intent form in the Admissions Process Guide; For students starting their flight training at FVTC, please follow the full program guide:

High School Transcript

Submit a final, official high school transcript or an official copy of GED/HSED certification scores.

1st or 2nd Class Medical Cert.

Obtain a 1st or 2nd Class FAA Medical Certificate and present to a college representative at the SJ Spanbauer Center who will make a copy of your original 1st or 2nd Class Medical Certificate issued within the last 12 months by an FAA-approved Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) - A 3rd Class Certificate is NOT acceptable;

Verification of Citizenship

Present Citizenship Documents to a College representative at the SJ Spanbauer Center who will make a copy of your original documents - Accepted documents include: United States Passport, OR An Official Birth Certificate and Driver’s License, OR Certificate of Naturalization and Driver’s License

Student Pilot Certificate App

Submit an application for the Student Pilot Certificate in IACRA and complete it by visiting a Flight Instructor, Designated Pilot Examiner, or FAA office.

Student Pilot Certificate

After receiving your Student Pilot Certificate applied for in Phase 1, present your signed card to a college representative at the S.J.

Request NSO

After you have completed all items of phase 1 (declaration and aeronautics pilot intent form, transcripts, skills assessment, tour/overview, completed student pilot certificate application 1st or 2nd FAA medical certificate, and citizen documentation) send your request email to Catey Frost frost@fvtc.edu indicating you have completed all tasks necessary to attend an Orientation session; IMPORTANT to minimize delays in receiving an Orientation invite, (do not email a request to attend until every step prior this in Phase 1 is complete).

Pilot Orientation

Attend a required orientation session: You must bring the following ORIGINAL documents: medical certificate, citizenship documents, and student pilot certificate; You may not register for the Student Success Workshop or the Training Course Outline without these documents.

Program Readiness 1

Register for Student Success Workshop (Online Blackboard course); Failure to complete the Student Success Workshop on time and successfully as prescribed in Student Success Workshop Student Supplement results in ineligibility for Pilot Program acceptance

Program Readiness 2

Register for the Training Course Outline (TCO) Overview; Failure to complete the Training Course Outline (TCO) Overview on time and successfully as prescribed in Training Course Outline (TCO) Overview Student Supplement results in ineligibility for Pilot Program acceptance

FAA Equipment Verification

Assemble and bring everything from the required resource list received in Admissions folder and Temporary Airman's Certificate OR Student Pilot Certificate OR current pilot certificate (plastic card) with you to the FAA Equipment Verification.

Provide TOEFL scores. TOEFL scores are NOT needed if enrolling into the Intensive English Program.

  • Minimum TOEFL scores needed for entering an Associate in Applied Science Degree Program:
    • 520 on the paper-based test
    • 190 on the computer-based test
    • 68 on Internet-based test
  • Non-native English speakers who meet the minimum TOEFL requirements should enroll in ‘Bridge’ courses during the first

semester at Fox Valley Technical College. ‘Bridge’ courses receive additional assistance from an English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor and are designed for students transitioning from ESL to non-ESL courses
