Master of Arts in Geography

Students in the M.A. program emphasize the human geographic subfields, including the human aspects of environmental geography. M.A. students use a humanities (qualitative) or social science approach in their studies. Departmental strengths related to the M.A. degree include cultural-historical geography, cultural-political ecology, economic development and globalization, gender and development, agriculture and food studies, urban geography, and environmental planning and sustainability. Students pursuing an M.A. degree in Geography may also earn the GISc certificate – CTGISG.

Job Opportunity Potential

Graduates with an M.A. in Geography have a wide variety of professional opportunities in addition to pursuing doctoral degrees. Graduates work in local, state, or federal government agencies, nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), consulting companies, educational institutions, and private industry

PSW Opportunity

Post-Study Work visa or permit, allowing international students on F-1 visas to work in the US after completing their studies, typically through Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Eligibility:
To be eligible for OPT, students must have been enrolled full-time in a US educational institution for at least one academic year and be seeking work related to their major.

Duration:
Students can apply for up to 12 months of OPT, either before they finish their studies (pre-completion) or after graduation (post-completion).

STEM OPT:
Students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields can apply for an extended OPT period of up to 24 months.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Graduate status requires an earned bachelor's degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association, or an international degree that is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree from a college or university recognized and approved by the Ministry of Education or Commission responsible for higher education in the country where the degree is earned. 

Bachelor’s degree with a minimum 3.0 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale. Other factors, including having professional experience or an outstanding portfolio, may be considered for probationary admission if the undergraduate GPA is below the minimum requirement.

  • iBT TOEFL: 80 composite, 17 all sections
  • IELTS Academic: 6.5 composite and across all bands
  • Paper TOEFL: 550 composite, 5 composition, 52 all other sections
