Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking

Nationally recognized for its professional excellence, the Printmaking Area is devoted to developing diverse and exceptional artist-printmakers. Its mission is to create an environment promoting critical dialogues that investigate contemporary art issues as well as the process of creating art. The graduate program develops students who are competitive in educational and professional printmaking fields.

The Printmaking Area is committed to encouraging self-exploration as artists and experimentation within a broad range of print media that includes lithography, screenprinting, relief, intaglio, monotype, digital print, post-digital technologies, letterpress and papermaking. Using print language and techniques, students often also investigate mixed media, socially engaged practice, installation, performance, mass reproduction and other strategies in the creation of art. The Printmaking faculty have a strong commitment to providing one-on-one instruction to their graduate students, creating collegial and mentoring relationships.

Job Opportunity Potential

Our students regularly go on to receive Fulbright Awards, national artist-in-residencies, gallery representation, university teaching positions and other types of professional positions in the field as post-graduates. The Ohio University printmaking department has successfully assisted undergraduate and graduate students in obtaining internships and work as professional printers in such well known studios as Cone Editions, Echo Press, Landfall Press, Nexus Press, Tyler Graphics, ULAE, Vermilion Press, and Women's Studio Workshop.

PSW Opportunity

Post-Study Work visa or permit, allowing international students on F-1 visas to work in the US after completing their studies, typically through Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Eligibility:
To be eligible for OPT, students must have been enrolled full-time in a US educational institution for at least one academic year and be seeking work related to their major.

Duration:
Students can apply for up to 12 months of OPT, either before they finish their studies (pre-completion) or after graduation (post-completion).

STEM OPT:
Students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields can apply for an extended OPT period of up to 24 months.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Graduate status requires an earned bachelor's degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association, or an international degree that is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree from a college or university recognized and approved by the Ministry of Education or Commission responsible for higher education in the country where the degree is earned. 

Bachelor’s degree with a minimum 3.0 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale. Other factors, including having professional experience or an outstanding portfolio, may be considered for probationary admission if the undergraduate GPA is below the minimum requirement.

  • iBT TOEFL: 80 composite, 17 all sections
  • IELTS Academic: 6.5 composite and across all bands
  • Paper TOEFL: 550 composite, 5 composition, 52 all other sections
