Teaching English as a Second Language Specialization, M.Ed.
The Master of Education with specialization in Teaching English as a Second Language is designed as an intensive program for students who already hold a bachelor’s degree. Successful completion of the program will prepare candidates to take the Praxis II in English as a Second Language and/or expand their current knowledge of the field at the graduate level. The target audiences are current teachers who wish to add a graduate level ESL certification to their current licensure area, current ESL teachers who wish to improve their knowledge of and expertise in the field of ESL, and those interested in teaching English as a foreign language abroad in positions that do not require teacher certification.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT): The GMAT is not required for applicants but is recommended for applicants with an overall cumulative bachelor’s GPA of less than 3.0. Contact the program coordinator prior to registering for the test.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
TOEFL Essential - minimum score of 8 on the Internet-based exam
TOEFL iBT - minimum score of 71 on the Internet-based exam
*Scores older than two (2) years will not be accepted. UNCW's school code is 5907
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - minimum score of 6.0 on the academic module. Scores older than two (2) years will not be accepted.
Duolingo English Test (DET) - minimum score of 95
Pearson PTE - minimum score 54
iTEP Academic - minimum score of 3.7 on iTEP Academic Plus
