History of CDU
Charles Darwin University (CDU) was founded in 2003 after merging the Northern Territory University (including the Centralian College of Alice Springs, Katherine Rural College, and the University College of NT) and the Menzies School of Health Research.
Pioneer Northern Territory higher education institutes preceding these include Darwin Community College opened in 1974, the Centralian College of Alice Springs opened in 1979 and the Darwin Institute of Technology opened in 1985.
No other single Australian university serves such a large area of the continent, in such a remote location and with such a small population to sustain it.
Celebrating a milestone

The Northern Territory spans approximately one-sixth of Australia’s landmass and yet is home to just one per cent of the population, of whom 30 per cent are First Nations Peoples.
Due to our location, we are in an enviable position to contribute to the future opportunity of Northern Australia, and our neighbours in the Asia Pacific, through our innovative and impactful training, education, and research.
The University now has the new Strategic Plan in place, which will guide the development of our university over the next five years. It gives us a very clear road map to building a bigger, better and stronger university, valuing and empowering our people to make a difference.

Casuarina
Casuarina campus is CDU's largest study location and the main hub for Higher Education, Vocational Education and Training (VET), and Research programs.
Palmerston
CDU’s Palmerston campus is a friendly, warm and welcoming place for students, staff and visitors. Our aim is to engage with the dynamic and growing community of Palmerston and the surrounding region in order to contribute to growth and development for future generations.
Katherine
Katherine campus is located 16km north of Katherine and 300km south of Darwin in a rapidly developing mining, agricultural, horticultural and tourist region. You can reach Katherine Town by car, bus, train and plane, and it is a destination stop for many tourists venturing out to see one of the many natural or tourist attractions close by.
Alice Springs
CDU's Alice Springs campus is a major educational hub catering for domestic and international students in the town and in Central Australia’s remote communities. The dual-sector campus provides higher education, research and vocational studies in a modern and well-resourced environment on site and is the base for extensive training for other communities in the Northern Territory.

Positioned right in the heart of the city’s Central Business District (CBD), Charles Sturt University Study Centres in Melbourne is in the ideal setting to study and immerse yourself in student life. We offer a range of postgraduate and undergraduate courses, taught in bright, modern classrooms with the latest facilities, including computer labs, a well-equipped library and extensive online resources.
