Visa to study in the Netherlands

To study in the Netherlands, international students need to obtain a student visa. However, even after acquiring the visa, the process is only half done. Once acquiring the visa and finally landing in the Netherlands, students need to apply for a residence permit. This is required by all students who wish to stay in the country for more than 90 days and naturally if a student is pursuing a full-time course, the duration is far more than that.

The process has, in short, two steps. The first step involves acquiring the entry visa, also referred to as the MVV. The university you apply into and are accepted into will submit your entry visa on your behalf to the IND(Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service). Once approved, you can receive the MVV which is valid for 90 days and proceed to the next step, which is applying for the Residence Permit, also called the VRV. It usually takes at least 14 days to recieve the VRV.
