Art History
Study art and visual culture in its social and political context. Western’s Art History program focuses on global networks of cultural exchange and is committed to interdisciplinary approaches informed by critical theory. This field of study develops cross-cultural understanding and a global perspective from the Renaissance and Baroque eras, in Mesoamerican, Hispanic American, Canadian, and Contemporary Art, Architecture, and Design, as well as Photography, Film and New Media. ?
Studio Art
The Studio Art program at Western combines hand-on studio practice with theory to foster an enriched artistic engagement in Photography, Printmaking, Sound, Video, Contemporary Media, Sculpture Drawing, and Painting. Hone your creative skills in our state-of-the-art facilities suited to traditional and emerging practices.

If your program was less than 8 months
- You aren’t eligible for a PGWP.
If your program was more than 8 months but less than 2 years
- We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for up to the same length as your study program.
For example, if you completed a 9-month program, we may give you a work permit for up to 9 months.
If your program was 2 years or more
- We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for 3 years.
If you completed more than 1 program
- You may be able to get a PGWP that combines the length of each program.
Each of the programs you completed -
- must be PGWP-eligible and at least 8 months in length
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
If you started a university program at another accredited school, and you want to finish your degree at Western, you are considered a university transfer student.
You’ll need:
- A minimum overall average of 70% (around a B- or 2.7 GPA) as calculated by Western in all previous university studies (equivalent).
- To have experienced no extensive academic difficulty at university
- Proof of English Language proficiency, if English isn’t your first language
- Specific requirements for your program

BFA Studio Art Program (portfolio required)
- Submit your portfolio to our BFA-degree program which culminates in the fourth year Practicum course where students make art in a dedicated studio space, work with a faculty advisor, stage an exhibition, produce a catalogue and develop the skills to professionalize their practice.
