Sociology and Social Policy - BSc (Hons) Degree

Are you passionate about social justice? Do you want to tackle complex social issues? Do you want to gain the skills and insights needed to address the challenges facing the modern world and make a difference?

The BSc (Hons) Sociology and Social Policy at Cardiff Met is a contemporary, practice-based programme that will equip you with the skills you need to address the core social challenges of today. You will study three key themes that are woven throughout the degree which include Individuals, Society and Power; Identity Difference and Inequality; and Space, Place and Justice.

At Cardiff Met, there is a strong focus on sustainability with authentic learning modules that respond to sustainability agendas including the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the UK and Welsh Government Net Zero Agenda. 

Foundation Year
This degree can be studied as a three-year full-time degree or a four-year full-time degree that includes a year of foundational study. Our foundation year is intended to prepare you for your subsequent years of studying, offering you the chance to strengthen your skills, knowledge and confidence.

The foundation year will be relevant to:

  • Students who aspire to enrol onto the first year of a social science-based honours degree programme, who have not achieved the standard entry requirements to enter at year one of the chosen degree.
  • Students who have not studied subjects that provide the necessary background within the scientific disciplines required to enter at year one of the chosen degree.

PSW Opportunity

  • 2 Years PSW is applicable after completing a minimum duration of 9 months course (like- Undergraduate, Postgraduate Level)
  • 3 Years PSW is applicable after completing PhD level courses.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

For India

  • Students with good grades in their Polytechnic / College of Technology Diploma (3- to 4-years in duration).
    OR
  • Students with good grades in their Indian Certificate of Education - awarded on completion of Standard X AND who have completed a recognised Foundation Course.
    OR
  • Students with good grades in their Higher Secondary School Certificates - Indian School Certificate (ISC) / Intermediate Certificate / Higher School Certificate / Higher Secondary Certificate / All India Senior School Certificate / Pre-University Course - awarded on completion of Standard XII

For Bangladesh

  • Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Intermediate with GPA 4.0 plus IELTS of 6.0 will be considered for Year 1 entry
  • A-Levels or International Baccalaureate
  • American High School Diploma with GPA 3.0 (grade B average) plus one of the following:
    • SAT 1 combined score of 1800 or above and a 6 score in the essay
    • ACT (American College Test) score of 20 or above
    • Advanced Placement Tests (Aps) with grade 3 or above in at least two relevant subjects

For Pakistan

  • Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Intermediate in Pre-Engineering or Pre-Medical stream with 60% pass 
  • Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Intermediate Science/Humanities/Commerce stream plus recognised Foundation Course 
  • A-Levels or International Baccalaureate.
  • American High School Diploma with GPA 3.0 (grade B average) plus one of the following:
    • SAT 1 combined score of 1800 or above and a 6 score in the essay
    • ACT (American College Test) score of 20 or aboveAdvanced Placement Tests (Aps) with grade 3 or above in at least two relevant subjects

Bachelor of Arts/Commerce/Science/Technology (two year) with 50% pass

For Sri Lanka

  • Students with good grades in their Sri Lankan General Certificate of Education (Advanced level).
    OR
  • Students with good grades in their Sri Lankan General Certificate of Education (Ordinary level) AND
  • who have completed a recognised Foundation Course.
    OR
  • Students who hold a Diploma in Social Work / Higher National Diploma (HND) / Advanced Diploma in Social Work.

For Nepal

  • Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Intermediate 60% pass.
  • A-Levels or International Baccalaureate
  • American High School Diploma with GPA 3.0 (grade B average) plus one of the following:
    • SAT 1 combined score of 1800 or above and a 6 score in the essay
    • ACT (American College Test) score of 20 or above
    • Advanced Placement Tests (Aps) with grade 3 or above in at least two relevant subjects

Students whose first language is not English will need to provide evidence of fluency to at least an IELTS 6.0 standard or equivalent.

Candidates who do not possess normal minimum entry qualification are interviewed and considered individually on the basis of their prior learning or working background.

Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer into year 2 & 3
