Master of Professional Psychology
Prepare for your final internship to become a practising psychologist, with a Master of Professional Psychology at Victoria University.
The Master of Professional Psychology at VU provides an accredited pathway to register with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) as a practising psychologist. Accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC), this course concludes five years of university training, followed by a required year of supervised psychology practice at a professional internship of your choice, outside the university.
Through in-depth learning and supervised placements under expert guidance, you will build your skills and knowledge to progress towards becoming a practising psychologist.
At VU Psychology Clinic, you will provide psychological services under close supervision to a culturally diverse community seeking support for a range of mental health issues. For strong career outcomes, you will have opportunities to:
practise both face-to-face and using telehealth
facilitate group psychotherapy programs
apply for a placement at our Orygen outpost where you will gain experience in providing early-interventions for youth mental health

Footscray Park
Footscray Park Campus is next to parklands along the Maribyrnong River, a short walk from Footscray Station. Footscray is one of Melbourne’s multicultural hubs, only 10 minutes by train from the city. The campus has restaurants and cafes, learning commons, world-class sports science facilities, a bookshop, and a pool and gym. Job Opportunity Potential
The Master of Professional Psychology provides an accredited pathway to registration as a psychologist. After graduating, you can apply for a required internship year of supervised practice in psychology, as approved by the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA). Following completion of both this course and the internship year, you will become eligible to sit the National Psychology Exam, and apply for registration as a general psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA).

- Bachelor degree holders including honours can get upto 2 years of post study stay
- Master by course work and extended (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 2 years
- Masters by research (with a duration exceeding 2 years) and PhD holder can stay upto 3 years
- The Maximum eligible age to apply for PSW will be reduced to 35 years of age from 50 years of age for all applicants
Due to the Australian Indian Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement signed by the 2 countries, according to which:
- Indian students completing bachelor degree including honours can stay upto 2 years
- Bachelor degree with First class honours in STEM including ICT can stay upto 3 years
- Masters by coursework in extended researched (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 3 years
- PhD students can stay upto 4 years
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
Master’s (by Coursework)
- Bachelor's degree Completed with a degree classification of Second Division (55%), academic requirements may vary depending on the institution at which the qualification was obtained.
Master’s (by Research)
- Bachelor's degree Completed with an overall average of all subjects (in the final year) 70%.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
You will need to provide evidence that you have achieved one of the following levels of English language proficiency :
- IELTS (academic module): Overall score of 6.5 (no band less than 6.0)
- TOEFL Internet: Test score of 79. Section score no less than:
> Listening: 19
> Speaking: 19
> Reading: 18
> Writing: 22 - Pearson Test of English (PTE): Overall score of 58-64 (with no section score less than 50)
- University of Cambridge - Advanced (CAE): Overall score of 176. No individual band less than 169.
- VU English - English for Academic Purposes (EAP) (Level 6): Achieved.
IELTS, TOEFL, PTE and CAE: These tests must be taken no more than two years prior to commencing your course.
In some cases, we will accept test results from other methods of examination not listed in this table.
