Master of Applied Psychology (Clinical Psychology)

Prepare for a career as a Clinical Psychologist with a Master of Applied Psychology (Clinical Psychology) at Victoria University.

The Master of Applied Psychology (Clinical Psychology) at VU provides an accredited pathway to clinical psychology endorsement with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) as a fully registered psychologist. During your study, you will:

learn advanced theory and psychological practice skills
engage in practical classes and fieldwork placements
complete a minor masters research thesis.
With a unique emphasis on both cognitive-behavioural and psychodynamic therapeutic practice, this course will maximise your opportunities to apply a range of assessment, formulation and therapeutic techniques in clinical field placements at agencies across Melbourne and at the VU Psychology Clinic. For strong career outcomes, you will have opportunities to:

practise both face-to-face and using telehealth
facilitate group psychotherapy programs
apply for a placement at our Orygen outpost where you will gain experience in providing early-interventions for youth mental health.

Footscray Park

Footscray Park Campus is next to parklands along the Maribyrnong River, a short walk from Footscray Station. Footscray is one of Melbourne’s multicultural hubs, only 10 minutes by train from the city. The campus has restaurants and cafes, learning commons, world-class sports science facilities, a bookshop, and a pool and gym. It hosts many of our degree and postgraduate courses, including in business, sport, youth and community work, science, engineering and education.

PSW Opportunity

Post Study Work Steam Renames to Post Higher Education Work Steam.

  • Bachelor degree holders including honours can get upto 2 years of post study stay
  • Master by course work and extended (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 2 years
  • Masters by research (with a duration exceeding 2 years) and PhD holder can stay upto 3 years
  • The Maximum eligible age to apply for PSW will be reduced to 35 years of age from 50 years of age for all applicants

Due to the Australian Indian Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement signed by the 2 countries, according to which:

  • Indian students completing bachelor degree including honours can stay upto 2 years
  • Bachelor degree with First class honours in STEM including ICT can stay upto 3 years
  • Masters by coursework in extended researched (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 3 years
  • PhD students can stay upto 4 years

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

  • Completion of an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited four-year undergraduate sequence in psychology comprising a three-year major in psychology as part of an undergraduate degree, plus a fourth-year Honours specialisation (or equivalent) in psychology.
    This qualification should be completed within the last 10 years, with a minimum average of at least 75 in fourth-year sequence. PLUS
  • IELTS (or equivalent): Overall score of 7.0 (with no band less than 7.0 in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) in keeping with the AHPRA Registration Standard for English Language Skills.

Additional information

Applicants will also be required to:

  • Submit a completed VU supplementary information form.
  • Provide two referee statements (one personal and one academic) submitted via Australian Psychology Postgraduate Reference System.
  • Attend an interview (short listed applicants only)
  • Obtain a Working with Children Check prior to being placed in a work placement setting, in accordance with the accreditation requirements and the Department of Justice. Students with an overseas qualification in psychology will need to provide certification from the Australian Psychology Society (APS) that their qualification/s are equivalent to an APAC-approved, 4-year sequence in psychology.
