BS in Education (Early Childhood / Childhood Education: Psychology Child Life)

The major in Early Childhood and Childhood Education Dual Certification leads to a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree and prepares undergraduate students to work with families and teach children from Birth to Grade 6 in New York State.

Teacher candidates pursuing the Early Childhood and Childhood Education Dual Certification major must complete a concentration of courses in psychology-child life (PCL) which in combination with coursework on the subjects to be taught and pedagogical coursework, shall ensure that the teacher candidate has the knowledge, skills, and dispositions for supporting students and their families and teaching the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards.

 
Students who complete the major in Early Childhood and Childhood Education Dual Certification (B.S.) will:

Demonstrate strong knowledge of the subject matter they will teach
Demonstrate pedagogical content knowledge and the ability to use this knowledge to design effective lessons
Demonstrate teaching skills that promote student learning
Teach caringly, effectively, and professionally
Our degree candidates demonstrate an understanding of effective assessment of learning practices.

PSW Opportunity

Post-Study Work visa or permit, allowing international students on F-1 visas to work in the US after completing their studies, typically through Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Eligibility:
To be eligible for OPT, students must have been enrolled full-time in a US educational institution for at least one academic year and be seeking work related to their major.

Duration:
Students can apply for up to 12 months of OPT, either before they finish their studies (pre-completion) or after graduation (post-completion).

STEM OPT:
Students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields can apply for an extended OPT period of up to 24 months.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Official transcripts (mark sheets) of all secondary and post secondary academic work along with an explanation of the grading system (in English). NOTE: All years transcripts must be submitted.
Tests of English language proficiency
, if English is not your first language. Utica University requires one of the following:
 

  • Pearson Test of English (PTE), minimum score of 53; or
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 550 written, 213 computer-based, 79-80 internet-based;
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.0; or
  • Duolingo English Test (DET) score of 100
