Bachelor of Science (Health Sciences)

This course is multidisciplinary, giving you a solid grounding in public health. You can use the degree to work in the area of public health or as a pathway into other health degrees such as speech pathology, pharmacy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy.

Students who enrol in this course to commence 2021 will be able to choose a health data specialisation in their second year. The specialisation will provide the opportunity to acquire skills in the exciting and growing field of digital health and data analytics.

Public health practitioners work to achieve better health through the prevention of disease and disability. Rather than working with individual clients, public health practitioners work at the community or whole population level. They pay special attention to how social, economic and environmental factors affect health and wellbeing.

Optional units allow you to pursue your interests in other health areas or choose one subject for in-depth learning. You may select a practicum unit in your third year of study.

Choose your specialisation

There are a number of specialisations available in the third year of this course – units designed to hone your knowlege and skills in a particular area. You can choose to specialise in health data or health sciences, or select an Accelerated Bachelor Master pathway.

Health Data

In this specialisation, you'll learn how to analyse big data to reveal patterns and trends, and learn about data capture, cyber security, data visualisation and how artificial intelligence and machine learning are being used in health. You'll also grow your interpretive and decision-making skills and know how to present your results effectively to different audiences.

Health Sciences

This specialisation lets you combine studies in public health disciplines including health promotion, epidemiology and biostatistics, environmental health, occupational health and safety, and global public health administration with a range of optional units. Career outcomes are diverse and you'll be able to tailor your learning to suit the healthcare career of your choice.

Accelerated Master Degree Pathway

In this pathway you'll complete four units from a master degree in your third year, and continue on with the master degree in your fourth year. The time taken to complete an Accelerated Bachelor Master Degree is 6 months shorter than completing both degrees individually.

Perth

In close proximity to everything Perth has to offer, it boasts 116 hectares of bold architecture nestled amongst beautifully landscaped gardens. Thousands of students fill the campus grounds every day of semester, creating a vibrant, multicultural atmosphere. Over the past decade, the campus has undergone some major changes, with a variety of stunning modern buildings now interspersed with the original 1960s architecture. The majority of Curtin courses are delivered on this campus.

Kalgoorlie

Kalgoorlie is a historic mining town in the Goldfields region of Western Australia about 600 km east of Perth. The town was originally established in 1893 when gold was first discovered there, and today it remains an important centre for the state’s mining industry. Just outside the town is the Super Pit – the second-largest open-pit mine in the country. Curtin Kalgoorlie is located next to the Central Business District, with student housing a short walk away, providing a focused living and campus atmosphere. The Student Guild is a focus of student activity such as the renowned WASM wombats mining team.
