Diploma Of Community Services

Experienced industry practitioners will guide you through the program, which combines theory and practical experience.

Our classes involve lively in depth discussion and debate of social and community issues impacting on the lives of individuals and groups in society.

Topics such as such as human rights, diversity, family violence, child, family and youth issues, and child protection are explored.

You will develop skills in research and report writing, advocacy, casework, counselling, case management with opportunities to be involved in relevant student projects, for example; students run yearly forums on family and domestic violence with invited guests from industry.

PLACEMENT

The course includes two supervised placements (one for each year level) in relevant community service settings. (Total 440 hours over two years).

You will be assisted to find suitable placements and be supported by our experienced placement teachers.

It is through placement our students build valid work-related experience, valuable network contacts and references and in many cases – job offers.

There are many other job titles that are covered by this course and as a graduate of our ACWA accredited course you will be highly regarded for the skills and knowledge you bring.

The Dandenong campus is one of the largest campuses in South East Melbourne, with facilities for international and VCE students, a café, patisserie, hair and beauty salon, campus store, hi-tech automotive centre, a large library and computer lab, Dandenong campus is well equipped to provide you with what you need to succeed in your studies. Located on Stud Rd, with bus routes, train stops and freeways all nearby, as well as lots of on-site parking, Dandenong is also very accessible for the whole South East Melbourne area.

PSW Opportunity

Post Study Work Steam Renames to Post Higher Education Work Steam.

  • Bachelor degree holders including honours can get upto 2 years of post study stay
  • Master by course work and extended (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 2 years
  • Masters by research (with a duration exceeding 2 years) and PhD holder can stay upto 3 years
  • The Maximum eligible age to apply for PSW will be reduced to 35 years of age from 50 years of age for all applicants

Due to the Australian Indian Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement signed by the 2 countries, according to which:

  • Indian students completing bachelor degree including honours can stay upto 2 years
  • Bachelor degree with First class honours in STEM including ICT can stay upto 3 years
  • Masters by coursework in extended researched (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 3 years
  • PhD students can stay upto 4 years

• Minimum age requirement: 18

• As applicants will work with vulnerable clients, applicants are required to demonstrate good communication skills and present with a calm and engaging demeanor
• Some applicants may find exposure to the content of the course distressing and may possibly find this triggers past traumatic events. If this is a possibility, students should consider putting additional supports in place prior to commencing the course.

Experience:
• No experience is required to undertake this course
Other:
• Students will need to have resilience and coping strategies in place to manage the potential challenges of the course.
On successful completion of this course, graduates will be required to work with individuals and families. It is a requirement of the course that all students participate in individual and group presentations and role plays.

Students are required to bring a laptop to class.
