New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Civil)
Students will learn the core knowledge and practical skills required to meet industry needs in their chosen strand of engineering.
This two year programme will provide students with th?e practical skills and knowledge for working on the design, construction and maintenance of civil engineering infrastructure, from roads and bridges, to harbours, water and wastewater facilities.

Job Opportunity Potential
Graduates may be employed as engineering technicians in workplaces with a technical/engineering basis relevant to civil engineering.
Roles may include working on structures like roads, buildings, bridges, water resources such as waste and stormwater systems, and geotechnical assessments such as earthwork testing and monitoring.
PSW Opportunity
Level 7 (Bachelor’s degree)
- Duration: Equal to length of study (typically up to 3 years)
- Requirement: minimum 30 weeks full time study in NZ
Level 7 (Graduate Diploma)
Eligible for PSWV
Conditions:
- Must also hold a Bachelor’s degree (NZ or overseas)
- Duration: Up to length of study (typically 1 year)
Level 8 (Postgraduate Diploma)
- Duration: Equal to length of study, OR
- Up to 3 years in some cases (if part of higher qualification pathway)
Level 9 and 10 (Master’s degree and Doctoral degree)
- Duration: 3 years
- Condition: Must study at least 30 weeks in New Zealand
- Most eligible international students can work up to 25 hours per week during study and full-time during scheduled breaks, only if their student visa includes work rights.
- Foundation, pathway and short courses have different rules.
- Not allowed for part time students.
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
Level 6 Admission Requirement:
Completed Year 12 or equivalent.
Based on study completed after school (tertiary study)
- Completed the New Zealand Diploma (Level 5);
- Or a recognised equivalent.
Level 7 Admission Requirement:
Candidates are required to:
i) have successfully completed a bachelor degree from a New Zealand Institution or an approved and accredited overseas institution; or
ii) Successfully completed a Level 6 or 7 Diploma and relevant work and/or life experience (equivalent to a bachelor degree); or
iii) Evidence of equivalent practical, professional or educational experience as approved by the Centre Director or authorised nominee.
Concurrent programmes:
IELTS 5.5 with a minimum of 5.0 in all bands, or equivalent
Programmes level 4 and below:
IELTS 5.5 with a minimum of 5.0 in all bands, or equivalent
Programmes levels 5 to 7:
IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all bands, or equivalent
Programmes level 8 and above:
IELTS 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in all bands, or equivalent
Additional requirements:
2 year validity period for all assessments. External bodies may influence some programme specific IELTS levels. You must provide evidence of your proficiency in the English language.
